I'm looking for a large diaphram condensor all around mic in the 300.00 dollar range. You know the ones with the high SPLs. Iv'e come real close to buying a used one on ebay but some wise guy out bid me at the very last minute, the nerve of some people. ;)

Anyway I've had my mind set on a Shure KSM27 but my gut tells me this isn't the way to go. Does anybody have any experience with these mics?

I want to get something that alot of people have tried and like. So what are the top three?

I know these questions are asked all the time and everyone is probably tired of them but here I go again.

Have patience with me I have a toothache.

Yea, and they're actually pretty good. In that range, I think the ksm27 or Audio Technica 4040 are the way to go. The CAD M-179 is also a really good one for about $200 and has multiple patterns to boot.

A good all around mic and one that can handle high SPL are not necessarily the same. What are you going to do with the mic that would require the high SPL rating? For that matter, what are you going to be doing with the mic, period? That will make a pretty big difference in what gets recommended....

Basically vocals, electric guitar cab, bass guitar cab, maybe some drums, bongos other percussion, regular band stuff. That's why I want an all around mic.

Although I don't plan on recording my electric guitar sreachingly high. I probably won't reach the max SPL on the mic. (I think)

I already own an SM57, SM58 and an D880 AKG all dynamic mics. But I'd like to try a condensor. For example the other night I wanted to record some hand clapping for a song. I used the SM58 and it came out terrible. I know a condensor would work much better.

Well gosh, not to be rude... but what are you going to do when you want to buy a car... are you going test drive any, or just buy one like mine?

trust your gut....get an AT 4033. you will use it on something every time you record. it is a great all around mic

I know what you're saying. I usually shop at Guitar Center or Sam Ash I've never seen them available for a "test drive".

Make sure to get an EV 635a omni to go along with whatever condenser. Reputed to be great on general percussion, guitar cabs, and sometimes vocals too.

Man that's a great review for this mic.

I read a review on the Shure KSM27 from the same site and it was short and weak. Hmm

This is just kind of a heads-up for you, but I don't necessarily consider prowreck to be a very good or credible source for product reviews. They've done a few really iffy ones I had to scratch my head over. And for this guy to make claims about the Rode being as good as "any mic in the world" . . . :D I have to chuckle at that one. Just use some judgement.

To be honest I did think the guy who wrote up the review for the NT1000 laid it on a little thick. He sounds a little to happy and crazy about this mic. Makes you wonder.

Thanks.

just wondering... why is your mind set on a LDC?
Me too... hey, Massimo why are you set on a LDC?

Curiosity mostly. I want to see what my guitar cab will sound like with a condensor and also vocals. Sometimes I might want to record some bongos or something too. I know these mics pick up truer sound than dynamics, their frequency levels are broader and are more sensitive. Like I said I have 3 dynamic mics, it's time to try something new.

Thick indeed!

Yes, it was thick. However, if you look at some of the links to the other mics he reviewed, you'll see he doesn't talk that way about everything. All in all, I've learned a lot at that site.

What about a Studio Projects B3 for $159?

You get (3) patterns, and a fairly neutral sound. The omni would be interesting for an experiment with guitar cabs, since omni mode eliminates the proximity effect from close micing.

I plan on a dot-matched pair of SP B3 so I can use the Figure-8 pattern for stereo Blumlein technique, and in omni mode with a 3rd mic so I can tinker with the Decca Tree technique.

actually the question wasn't why a LDC over a Dynamic, but why a LDC instead of a SDC.

Don't rule out SDC mics... and if your budget will allow, consider buying a pair.

the 4033 is mentioned often, and for good reason, but it's not a LDC mic. it's in betweeen a LDC and SDC.
