Seeing as I don't actually own a 22-2, I figured it would be more democratic to post this here, rather then in the original form it was delivered to me; that being by personal PM.a little help if you will (tascam 22-2 content) and a bit of other stuff too.
ok...so i got a 22-2 as a mixdown deck. i also have a tascam 244 here, and although i can't really use it yet (last year in college and exams through the roof), i have a question about it, but mostly about the 22-2.
244: my only problem with this one is how in god's name do i turn a balanced source into an unbalanced one (mic/line in). all my pres are outboard, and i have pretty decent stuff, but they all come out balanced...i have many DIs, but the concept is backwards i guess, cause i now need an unbalanced signal so i don't loose any quality or degrade the whole thing. i guess i could just plug the balanced jack there and one of the tip/ring/sleeve or whatever would simply remain disconected and i would get by, but i would really like to do this the correct way, as to not loose anything sound wise (i got a ton of other electric studio stuff around the recorders, etc so crap/hum is bound to happen i guess)...any thoughts?
22-2: about this...i got it damaged, it was a good deal i guess because it works, but it is in fact damaged. it'll playback and rewind just fine, but in slow motion. it's akward, but something told me it would be fixable and this was a deal so my instinct told me to jump in. other than the slow playback, the bulbs are down. i'm really hoping these are all easy fixes...but this is really not what i want to ask...mainly, i want to get the best out of it (in my opinion), and that (for me) is saturation. i know it's hard to push the "lower" tascam decks into decent saturation (right?), but i read a lot of posts on the analog forum and i got the feeling it could be done with this one. i already have a ton of quantegy 407 ordered, and despite not even knowing how to put the tape in there and get the whole thing going, i'm excited. what i do want to ask is if you could please give me a bunch of settings (bias, calibration, setting it up for Q407, etc), everything you feel is necessary, so i can give the whole thing written down to the tech that's going to work on it.
my aim here is saturation...i'm not looking for an hi-fi deck, or sound quality, i want some dirt on the recordings...well, not so much dirt, but i want to hear the air moving, as opposed to severe tape hiss...that's not what i'm looking for. i really want to get this thing going into saturation...but i feel that, in order to achieve it, i need to setup the machine just right, and then learn some tips (for instace i don't even know if i should go into the line ins in the back or straight into the pres in the front), or how much gain should i push in there...and what do people mean when they say you have to wack the tape if you want saturation - does this mean gain on the mixdown source (mixer/soundcard) or the pres in the 22-2?
i guess i need to know all kinds of things, and especially how to set it up myself...any good reading/books/tips about this would be treated like gospel...
anyway...very sorry about the long post Ghost...hope you can help me out here, and again, sorry to PM you like this.
many many thanks in advance!
thanks.
ps. can i also ask how much recording time will i get at 15ips with this?

thanks again!
Cheers!

PS;
I'll try to get to some of this as time allows...in the meantime, everyone here is welcomed to throw down the knowledge.
