I play punk rock...

I've been playing for about four years now, and I've decided to do some equiptment upgrades. Currently I have a very nice Fender Japanese Stratocaster (which I have no reason to replace at the moment), but not a real nice amp. It's a Fender Deluxe 112 90Watt. The volume control is WAY too touchy, especially with distortion, and the biggest difference in volume is from 1-2, and in order to get more juice from there you have to really crank it. *sighs*

Anyway, I was wondering, with my style of music in mind, what would be the best amp to get. Like I said, I play primarily punk, and another variable is that I'm also upgrading -getting rid of all my old effects- and buying one of the new BOSS GT-8 effects boards which seem to be the end-all of all effects (in that price range, at least). Since I'm buying an effects pedal anyway, should I even take the natural tone of the amp into consideration? For $700 I could get the 60W Fender Hot Rod Deville, but I'm also leaning toward either the Marshall AVT50H Half-Stack Package (50W head, 4x12 cab), or the Line 6 412 Closed-Back Cabinet with a Spider II HD Head.

The biggest issue for me is tonality. I want to be able maybe to incorporate some of the natural drive from the amps along with the BOSS effects, without getting too hissy. For now, I'm leaning toward the Deville.

Any advice or observations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the deville is a pretty decent amp. the distortion in my opinion isn't very fender like.....which for punk rock would be a good thing. i have a friend that used to use one of those when he was in a punk band and used the distortion from his amp. sounded like any other punk band.

i would stay away from any solid state marshall. there is a marshall dslsomething or other......i think a dsl401.......it's like 800 bucks new, but you could find one on ebay a whole bunch cheaper i'm sure. it's a pretty small combo, but for band practice it would be plenty loud and it sounds pretty good. i need to take off right now, but when i get back home, i'll check for sure what amp i'm thinking of and let you know.

also. if you get the line6, i don't see any reason to get the boss multi-effect thing. i've only heard some of the older line6's, and they sounded a lot better than any multi effect unit i've heard. i'm guessing they've gotten better too. i'm assuming the line6 you're referring to has a bunch of effects on it?

for your style of music, tubes would not be THAT important.

that said, I think the spider sounds very good, especially for your type of sound. Check out this song where the guitars where done with a spider ii head .

you sure you're even gonna be using the effects? i've been playing in all forms of punk and hardcore bands for the past few years and all i've ever used is the distortion from my marshall valvestate vs100 head. i'm getting picky with my clean tone lately so i'm probably gonna replace it with a sovtek head when i get the chance and just use an eq pedal for my distortion. still, that amps lasted me through 4 cds and every show i've played in the past few years. pretty damn reliable.

this is the marshall i was referring to. this link seems like a high price. i did hear marshall prices went up drastically a while back, so it could be about normal now. id check ebay.

you could also get a rivera knucklehead55 or knucklehead100 off of ebay. they go for around 500 bucks give or take a hundred or so. that's what i have and it's badass.

If so, I see mixed reviews, so I'm not entirely sold.

And although I do primarily punk, I do use wah, delay, and all sorts of crap...so I think to have it all localized in one pedal will be good.

But just a question. Do you find that without any external effects you can still manage to get a variation enough, a distinction, between songs? (If so, I'll have to consider even further.) What settings, if I were to use this Marshall head, would you suggest using for punk?

yea i wouldn't pay that much money for it at all. thats retarded expensive for either of those 2. you can get a much better head for like $300. i'd say don't pay more than $250 for it. personally i keep the gain around 3 and crank the volume insanely high.

The only effects I have left is an MXR Distortion+ and an MXR SuperComp (compressor). I have zero need at the moment for anything else. Those are not even "effects" IMO. A wah would be nice, but I wouldn't see that as an effect like a delay.

Do not get the avt it is a very cheap sounding amp. Go with a nice used jcm 800/900. or save your money and buy the tsl 100 you wont regret it......

that amp has plenty of gain for punk. you're not playing metal. i think cyanjaguar may be thinking it's your typical fender amp. it isn't. it's got a lot of gain for a fender. unless you're playing hardcore punk or metal, it will be fine. play one yourself.

plus you said you want to get a multi effects pedal. if you aren't happen with the amount of distortion the deville will give you, you can use the pedal. i can't see a punk guitar player needing more distortion than that amp can give them though.
