now, i know guitar players all use their mono cables,
but i don't have any laying around, so i always hope they bring theirs,
i'm gonna do some more shopping soon so i might need a few
guitar cables...
i'd like to get me a few 'long' ones, so the musicians can play in the hall or room next door... thinking about a 10 meter cable = 32 foot

what i did last week was this: plugged the rather short guitar (TS) cable into a trs-extension cord of about 6 meter (20 foot) and plugged that into my sansamp

so, is there a difference between cables u use to connect a guitar to the amp, or to a preamp ( like the sansamp psa 1)

i heard paradoxal things, some peoplee say trs will buzz more on guts,
others say it might help against buzz... so guess what,
i'm confused

and since i'd just buy me two long cables i want some quality,
i assume i should be looking at Monster or Canare... ?

regards,

Guitar is always mono (well, in some very exotic occasions stereo, but that's really nothing to worry about). If you use a TRS cable, the R part of the cable will simply not be used. So, there's no difference. Do remember that these are NOT balanced, so the longer you make them, the more noise and signal loss you will get.

It's not a good idea to use TRS cables on guitars/basses... sometimes, the jack can contact the TR portion "strangely" and can cause all sorts of problems from intermittent noise to no sound (if the ring portion contacts on one side but not the other...)

Better to use the right cable for the job - stick with TS............

ok, good, now next,
this week i'll buy two guitar cables,
lets say i want decent ones so i don't end up buying others two weeks later..

and whats the longest "run" you would use?

i think 30 meter is the absolute max, don't worry thats not what i want..
but 8 meters or something will be useful for me ! (26 foot)

Check out the spectraflex cables. I have a Spectraflex Fatsoflex 6 meter cable for the guitar to the effects line. They come longer than that, but I don't need more. They are very thick, tweed braided cables with a live-long no ticket needed warranty. They are not cheap (my cable cost 70 euros) but it was well worth it. You don't have to worry about noise with a cable of about 8 meter either.

dont record with more than 20 feet.

i heard somewhere (this might not be true) that every six feet you lose 1 db.

You don't want to use TRS cables. If the guitar has EMGs or other active pickups, the guitar jack needs to be shorted between the R and S in order to turn the pickup on. The other thing is there is 9 volts running through the ring and sleeve in this setup.

20 feet is a good length for recording, but it might be a better idea to have the sansamp where the guitarist is and run a long line out of the sansamp. The line out will be balanced and won't pick up noise from a long run.

This is bogus. It is not the cable length itself that causes a difference in tone. You can have hundreds of feet of an analog cable without a drop in frequency response. The real issue is the construction of the cable, as in the braiding, the size of the conductors, etc, and the pick-up loading. Loading is what changes the sound. Yes, the best sounding cables will be ten feet and shorter.
