What do you think about the Audio Interface? Is it a good choice?

Behringer doesn't have a good reputation for quality, but the price is good.

Will the Behringer 1204USB will mix all of the channels into one track on the software? Or does it record each channel as a seperate tracks?

It only records to a stereo track. Probably tapping off the Main Outs. If you're only doing vocals and acoustic guitar, this won't be much of a problem. I you want to do more than that, you might have limitations.

Can you explain me what the Shock Mount does? Do you think it's neccessary for my combination?

The shock mount minimizes vibration to the microphone from the mic stand. If you're putting your mic on the desk, you should definitely use one. You should use one regardless of where it's mounted. Most, if not all, condensor mics come with shock mounts, so it's not like you're spending extra money to get a shock mount.

peace,

So what would you choose in place for this amount of money?
I really think that's it enough for me since it has great ratings (9 out of 10) and I'm not a professional user. Do you think it will be good for me?

I'm gonna record only one track each time (for example, first the acoustic guitar and then the vocals; or using a playback then record the vocals on it).
The maximum number of tracks that I think I'm gonna use will be 2 tracks.
So i don't think it's gonna be a problem...

So I gotta buy one. (The shock mount isn't included with my mic, it only has the microphone itself, a box, and a connector in order to put it on a stand).

Thank you again,
Yuval.

I Use this interface (This is the new version that has Phantom power and records at 24 bit, Only $92 on this site.): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/653404-REG/M_Audio_9900_53020_00_Fast_Track_USB.html

And this mic (Includes Shock mount): http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...denser-Microphone-with-Shock-Mount?sku=273156

I use them to record exactly what you plan to do (Vocals and Guitar), They work great for me, sounds good too for the money. Comes out to $141.99

I would recommend getting a tripod mic stand if you can instead of the desk top stand, especially when you get to recording that guitar.

Just my thoughts...:drunk:

Hi Yuval

I am also a newbie and am planning a setup similar to yours - see my thread

I sent you a private message too.

I don't like this Audio Interface, It has only one XLR input, and it doesn't have a lot of good reviews (look at Amazon..) So I think I'll go with the Behringer.

I have a question for you: I wanna buy the Behringer's mixer, I wanted the Xenyx 1204USB which has an integrated USB interface. Will it change a lot if I'll buy the same but without the USB interface (Xenyx 1204) and then connect the mixer to the Behringer UCA-202 via RCA cables?
Please look at both of them, coz I don't think it'll change a lot of thing.
I can buy the 1204USB for $130,
and I can buy the 1204 ($40) + UCA-202 ($29.90) - total of $70, which is a half of buying the mixer with the integrated interface..
What do you think?

Do you use the MXL 990 or the MXL 990 STEREO? And do you use the version with the XLR connection? the one that appears in this page: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...273156&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=26021004
I have researched a lot about this mic and I was happy to discover it since it has great reviews, and I listened to it in a recording on Youtube and liked the quality.
I think I'll decide between the Behringer C-1 and this one in the last minute as says...

I would recommend getting a tripod mic stand if you can instead of the desk top stand, especially when you get to recording that guitar.
Allright, I'll get a tripod mic stand.
Do you have any specific reccomendations for it?

Thank you and have a nice day,
Yuval.

P.S. Can I attach the link for the PDF file of the book "Home Recording For Musicians For Dummies" by Jeff Strong, which was disscussed on the beggining of this thread?

That was my next question, How many XLR inputs do you need? Look into the Fast Track Pro(Well loved around this site). If your going to just record a guitar and then overdub a vocal or two after you won't need much in way of XLR inputs, One will be fine. Besides the Shure interface you first mentioned is only one XLR anyways.

I wouldn't trust Amazon reviews if my life depended on it. look around the internet, Its a great interface. Also don't confuse this one with the original Fast Track. The MKII version as I linked to is a fantastic interface for simple work.

I urge you though to NOT buy the Behringer. Do a quick search around this site and see how many will discourage you away from a Behringer product. I have had nothing but problems with any Behringer I have ever owned, No matter what it was. Don't be wowed by its features they'll all die before you know it.

On the other hand, I have owned several M-Audio interfaces and have never had one single issue with them.

Again stay away from Behringer :spank: , You really don't "NEED" a mixer if your just doing simple vocal and guitar stuff. Keep it simple. It'll sound better.

I have a few of these(990) from when I use to record my band good for the money. Tried a C-1 once, Was horrible in my opinion.

I use just the standard 990 as shown. I have no need at all for a stereo mic.
If you would like a few more options check out: This.

It adds a low frequency roll off and a -10db pad. Personally I would just go with the plain 990.

Since your on a budget, No specific recommendations. I have a DR but their more expensive, Strong and heavy but expensive($60).

I'm not sure how many XLR input I really need. At this time I just want to connect one microphone and one guitar (It's not gotta be at the same time).
I just want to have the option to upgrade in the future. In the Fast Track Pro I can have more flexibility, because I can connect 2 mics or 2 guitars or 1 mic and 1 guitar at the same time while in the regulat Fast Track I will be able to connect 1 mic and 1 guitar.
My only concern is to get the best quality I can, and in my budget.
[By the way, I have a friend who have Digidesign 002r (which is more than $1,000) and it was great!!! But I can't afford it.]
Do you think that I'll get a good quality while recording vocals and an acoustic guitar to my computer with this combination? (M-Audio Fast Track/Fast Track Pro + MXL 990).
And another thing is, what do you think will be better? The regular Fast Track or the Fast Track Pro? (I mean quality, life length and durability, usability, etc.)
Which of them do you use? Can say that you're really very satisfies using this?
And a big request I have for you (You don't must to do that of course..), Can you upload a file of a recording you've made with the MXL 990 through the Fast Track?
What would you decide? The Fast Track or the Fast Track Pro? Now matter what's gonna be your answer, based on what?
In which software do you use to record using this Audio Interface (Is it supported by any recording softwares such as: cubase, adobe audition, audacity, and all the other popular softwares?)

It's just interesting me, What could be that bad with Behringer? Why do you so hate that brand?

I get good results, but its up to the user to get it sounding how they want in the end. Meaning mixing, mic placement, effects and eq etc etc.

I use them both, The Fast track is in my bag when when ever I take a road trip, where as my Fast Track Pro is on my desk at home when I record there.

I can't really find a difference in sound or quality between the two of them.

I'm completely satisfied with them both.

And a big request I have for you (You don't must to do that of course..), Can you upload a file of a recording you've made with the MXL 990 through the Fast Track?

I'll PM you a link to my stuff.

Poor quality components, They rip off other companies designs, can't take much abuse before breaking down. Warranty, Ha! Yeah right. Avoid!:spank:

My thoughts are that you ask too many questions :D ;)

Nothing wrong with asking lots of questions (I know I did when I was learning this stuff) as long as he's learning from the Q and A. :D

In the interests of balance.....

In the interests of balance.....

Good point, I'm salty on Behringer mostly because any thing I ever bought of theirs had a flaw or a part broke or it failed all together.

I'm sure there is some M-Audio naysayer's too, but I think Behringer probably has more. I'm sure there's some who have had no issues with a Behringer, I'm just not one of them.:D

Again good point on balance.

I understand that. I think a number of people would agree with you. On the other hand, some haven't had that continually poor experience yet. I've always felt that it simply isn't in any company's interest to deliberately produce shitty gear. Word of mouth probably accounts for more recommendations and condemnations than anything and company bods know that. I'm not saying they don't cut corners - to bring fairly low budget stuff out I guess that will happen - but at a certain level {like, cheap !} the Behringers of this world do have their place and with the stuff of theirs that I have, I've learned things. Of course I would have done so regardless, but I've noticed that even if 2/3rds of people have a downer on their stuff, a third don't, so........

Hello,
Sorry that I've gone for awhile..
This is what I'm going to buy at this time:
  • M-Audio Fast Track Pro
  • MXL 990 With Shockmount
  • Nady MPF-6 Pop Filter
  • Monster Cable S-100 XLR Microphone Cable

Now about the stand.
I wanna be able to record my acoustic guitar, and vocal. So I want it to be adjustablt so I can record vocals while I'm sitting or standing, and the same with the acoustic guitar.
I saw both of these stands:
http://accessories.musiciansfriend....od-Mic-Stand-with-Telescoping-Boom?sku=451052
http://accessories.musiciansfriend....0-Tripod-Mic-Stand-with-Fixed-Boom?sku=451051

What are the differences between "telescoping boom" and "fixed boom"?

And another thing, when I records my elctric guitar, Do I have to connect the guitar to my amplifier, than the amplifier output to the Fast Track Pro?
Or the guitar is connected directly into the Fast Track Pro?

Thanks again,
I really appreciate your help..!
Have a nice day,
Yuval.

I'm not entirely sure but I think that a telescope one is one that can extend to different sizes, so for example, if you are recording in a tight space or a very small confined space, you can make the boom arm really short or it's full length. With a fixed arm boom, the boom will always be the same length. You can adjust it to make it go where you want and in such a way that it appears short but you'll have the rest of it coming out on the other side. So if you are in a tight space a fixed boom stand might not fit in because of the overall length of the arm, whereas the telescope will fit because the arm goes inside itself to become smaller ~ just like a telescope.
With your electric guitar, I think you can do it either way, either through your amp then into your fast track via the amp output or directly into the fast track. Or alternatively, you could play the guitar through the amp and connect a microphone to the fast track and record it that way.

As far as cables and stands go I try to keep them as cheap as possible. They wont make much difference, so I find its best to save money where its not really needed. I have the cheapest stands and cables I could get my hands on them. and they have never failed me.

As for the guitar question. Do you know about DI (direct inject)? All you need to so is plug your guitar into a 1/4 inch jack input in the interface, and record from there, but you will only get a clean sound unless you have an amp simulator and/or the plugin effects to make the sound you want. I have tried pluging the guitar into the amp and the amp line out into my interface, but only had poor results. If you want the sound of your amp the best thing to do is save up and buy the mics to record the amp.

An update:
I purcahsed the combination that all of you suggested me (Fast Track Pro + MXL 990 and some accessories: stand, cablesm etc.) from Musician's Friends.
If anybody interested on the priced that I paid for it, then the Fast Track Pro and the MXL 990 were both together $176 (great deal, right?).
You just have to call them and ask for a quotation based on another posted quotation from another website, then they will beat the price by 10%..

It will arrive within 40 days, so I will update you what my impression about it is...
Thanks a lot for your advices...! :)

Are they sending it by dogsled or dolphin?

LOL :)
I live in Israel, so they've already shipped it by UPS within 3 days to an address of an Israeli logistics company in the US which recieves the packages that, then ship it to Israel.
Since the package is heavy (13 lbs) it costs a lot to ship it by Air Mail (more than $100), So I chose the economoic shipping plan which is a lower priority, and they have the right to choose if to ship it by Air Mail or E.S. (sea). you can read more here: http://www.usaddress.com/usaddress/english/

By the way, one of their sister company's name is Dolphin, so maybe that's the reason for the long time of shipping.. LOL :)
