I need more than 8 ins - what do i buy??

Ideally i would 16 ins , but 12-14 would be Ok

just wondering what others are using to achieve this result. I currently have 8 ins and want to start recording a whole band into my PC . can anyone suggest a solution for this problem. there seem to be about gazzillion boxes that do about 8 proper channels of (not including s/pdif and midi>) but I can,t find much in the way of boxes that do more. Have looked at a Mackie firwire desk that does 16 channels but that is pretty expensive when you have to buy the extra digi card. I know heaps of people must be recording into computers with 16 channels - how are they doing this.

have even looked at roland standalone box that does 16 tracks -but its expensive

any suggestions appreciated.

I think MOTU 24i would fit the bill.

Their converters tend to sound decent to above average at the price point, but I am very weary of their build quality.
 
yeah I checked that out just then and its about $2800.00 aussie.

can get a firewire 8 pre motu box for $1200.00 - buy 2 of them and you getting 16 pre amps plus software and stuff. so defintely worth looking at.

will investigate motu stuff in detail. Do you have some concerns with the build quality???? I,m not planning on bashing the box around - just set and forget. pretty much just hook everything up and leave it alone. pretty much what I,ve done in the past. what have you heard/experienced about motu??

Well, a few years ago when I had a 2408, I was having some driver problems. I went to MOTUnation, or whatever their bbs is, and notice an ALARMING amount of people had their MOTU units go up in smoke, LITERALLY!!! Many others who's boxes just plain ol' quit on them. A few people had problems with the new boxes MOTU sent them doing the same thing!

They also switched to a plastic type of box with a metal face plate. Their stuff just sort of feels cheap and flimsy.
 
Another option is the Presonus firestudio which gives you 8 preamps, then hook up a Behringer ada8000 via adat for another 8 channels. Cheap and cheerful, the whole lot will cost you under a grand usd
 
Cheap and cheerful, M-Audio Delta 1010 - plenty of guys use two at a time for the extra channels. I use just the one and it's great for me - I'm far from a pro though!

Just daisy chain two 8 input interfaces together. This can be done with any product from M-Audio, Motu, Mackie and even Presonus
