okay, now that i have your attention, here's the dilly:
i'm relatively new to the spooky world of recording, and my band is going to be producing our own demo very soon, and i'm not too sure about how one may get a decent quality piece of work done.
firstly, what is a good 8-track digital multitracker with sweepable midrange, onboard effects, and the ability to record all of those eight tracks at once.
secondly, is hooking the rca line-outs of the aformentioned multitracker to the line-in of a computer a safe and good practice?
lastly, will the software i use on the computer make a difference when i burn the tracks down to a cd? will there be a difference in quality between a piece of software that came with the burner than some commercial piece from a store?
any and all help would be appreciated. later.

1) is this a digital 8-track with spdi/f outputs (digital) that connect to a pc sound card, or is it really an RCA connection? gives specifics on the brand of the gear if you can.

2) from your post, i'm assuming that you are using the mixer as a pre-amp. since you mentioned EQ, it's better to record without EQ, and then EQ during the mix.

3) yes, the software you buy will be different (sometimes different means better) than the software that comes with the burner. for instance, sekd makes red roaster, and sonic foundry makes something or other. they allow you to 'master' your mixes to get them compressed, normalizes, and spaces properly... etc, but you've got a long road to travel before you even get that far if you want your demo to sound good.

4) how professional is this demo to be? are you doing it for the purpose of getting gigs, or to pass to record industry types. it's been my experience that clubs care more about your fan base than the quality of your demo.

What is your budget, and what kind of equipment have ya now?
