i need help with multitrack set up

hello everyone. hopefully someone can help me take a step in the right direction. im looking to get a set up that will be able to record 16 tracks simulatinously. i would like to try and bypass the whole protools thing if i can. im looking to save some cash. it doesnt have to be the flashiest setup, just something that can get the job done. im having trouble finding a soundcard that will support 16 mono tracks coming from an anolog mixer. then theres the problem of which program will read all of the tracks. im pretty lost. ive done alot of recording in the past 3 years, but it's be only a stereo interface with the acid program. never been experienced in multitrack recording.
i know its alot, but if someone can help me that would be awesome!! thanx

An Emu 1820M and an ADA 8000 would do the trick. Or you may even be able to use two 1010LT's synced via SPDIF.
Then there is a multitude of different programs that can be used.
n-Track is what I use most of the time.
PowerTracks manning1 swears by it.
