i have a casio cz1000 and i cant seem to make any sounds that i like.

all i have are those shitty presets.

any tips of your favorite sounds on any of your synths?

im pretty much a newb, so any help would be good help.

thanks!

Phase Distortion synthesis is kind of an oddball in the synth world so I would try yahoo or other group list that deal with that synth specifically

I've had the cz3000 since I was a kid and at one point I used to think it sucked. Later I learned the psychedelic value of the thing. I guess it must have the same synthesis as the cz1000. My programming method is usually, reset all values, select waveform, edit the DCO, DCW, DCA until I get a sound that's interesting. Theory is one thing but later it's really learning about how the different stages affect the waveform sonically and then just experimenting. Another thing to try is to couple it with outboard effects, for example, an analog delay and combining with the onboard portamento and glide - this might really get you somewhere. Put pitchbend to maximum and experiment with it. Run it though and a warm sounding cabinet. Try cutting some annoying frequencies with a parametric eq. In general the "cz sound" is quite distant (or cosmic / ethereal) which after a while can start to cause ear fatigue and begin to sound crappy. Therefore, once you make a sound you find interesting, it's better to get back to it the next day or the next week than trying to further build on right away. Have fun! ;)
