no one sells them anymore!!

so,... i need something else.

i figured i'd get the Delta 410, since it's only 110 bucks right now. if that deal goes away, i'll get the audiophile 2496. i have an audio buddy, but it doesn't work very well w/ my onboard sound.

so...

i was looking around, for some Powered monitors for a fairly cheap price, and i can't find any. the SP-5B Studiophiles that were a cheap cheap 200 bucks are now NON-EXISTENT. it's like they never even existed.

so i was thinking of getting these cheap, micro monitors.

the Edirol MA-10A. which is only 110 bucks. it has RCA ins, and a headphone jack, which is awesome. and they're powered.

i've been using headphones so far in mixing, so i think these will be quite the leap forward, but not as forward as "real" monitors.

what ya''ll s think????

The spb8's and spb5 have been discontinued. The bx8 and bx5 are their replacement. If you can spare $200 you can scrape up $60 and get them at newegg.com - and they give you free shipping, too.

Ok. Question.

Would a pair of BX5's be a huge improvement for monitoring over, say, a set of Logitech Z-560s?

I know the Logitechs aren't monitors, but could a $260 set of speakers really make all that difference?

:D

monitors 101: monitors are designed to point out flaws in the mix. they're not designed to "sound pleasing". as long as you're mixing on speakers designed to "sound pleasing", you're missing out on a lot of what's really going on with your recording.

you'll hear a HUGE difference, even with "just the sp5Bs".

cheers,
wade

ALesis M1s are quite cheap these days, and they're adequate studio monitors IMHO

I havnt heard too many good things about the Alesis M1s. Hear they sound too pleasing to the ear and its hard to get a good mix on them. But i havnt used them so i couldnt tell you directly.

What about the Yorkvilles? Its worth saving up a little extra money to get decent monitors. Also the Yamahas? I hear those are quite good.

Interesting timing on this. There was another thread around here (I don't know if it was in this forum) about Event 20/20s ... the passive ones ... and everyone (including myself) seems to really like them. NOW, they're more than the cheap ones you were looking at, but when you throw out a number like $260 for a pair of cheapies, I have to ask, Can you spare $40 more? Because you can get used Event 20/20s for a suprisingly consistent $300/pair, at least on a local used-gear BBS I frequent. Perhaps eBay has similar pricing?

Of course, you'd need to get an amp if you don't have one ... I recommend a used Hafler TA or P series.

It's more money but we're talking about real monitoring gear here for not MUCH more ...

Something to think about if saving up for this stuff.

Which actually makes it like $150+ more when you've got your amp and some "halfway-livable" cables.
You oughtta sell gear for a living!

:D

ooog.

the thing is for me, is that i have an audiobuddy, but the onboard soundcard/audiobuddy combo is really wack, like it sucks more than "mic in". i don't know why, but it picks up the radio, and has really low volume, and i can hear it through my headphones while playhing and junk.

so... i need a soundcard, but if i get a soundcard i need some way to hear, since nice soundcards all use 1/4 or RCA line outs. so i can't use headphones like i have been using. so i need speakers/monitors.

but money is definitely a factor since i don't work and should be studying more than goofing off w/recording.

so i was thinking of getting those cheap ass edirol micro monitors, cuz i figured those are better than headphones.

whatever, i'm not gonna buy anything for a while.

Heh. What I NEED to do is stop convincing myself to buy more gear. :D

Yeah joto, if you're not working, I'd say you could stick with headphones or pick up some powered speakers used for a modest price. I have a friend who uses a boombox as her monitoring station ... not ideal, but it lets the sides of her head breathe, gives the ears a break from 'phones, know what I mean?

alesis m1 mk2's arent bad at all...
but in certain situations and certain room sizes can give you too much bass...
i'd suggest these (i paid 400/pair, brand new)
and some auraflex m-pads...
they make a world of difference

Roland MA-8's are dirt cheap these days -ebay about 60 bucks. They could tide you over until the next upgrade. They're not bad at all for a starter set - not a ton of low end or a ton of power, but they're worlds above headphones or stereo speakers.
