I'm a beginner to the world of computer based recording and I want to get a similar sound to Alpha and Portishead. I know they use a lot of sampled sounds but I don't have a clue as to where to start building my system. I do have a new G4 mac and will be building around it. Can someone please point me in the right direction. Also what do you think of the new digi001?

If I had a Mac I would have gotten the Digi001 soon as it came out. If you haven't seen the demo video, I know they were offering free copies to whoever requested a while back. I got mine and was completely sold on the thing, then I found out the Windows platform ProTools LE they are porting is Win98 only. No NT4 or Win2000 even being worked on is what they told me via e-mail. If anyone knows different please let me know. The Digi001 seems to be an awesome product, especially if you have the Mac G4 already.

I don't have a Mac so other than that I can't offer any info. Sorry.

Thanks for the info. I'm sold on the 001 but what I need to know now is what's the best way to accomplish the sound and style of music I like ( Alpha, Portishead type stuff).
Should I use an akai sampler or e-mu? Should I get a controller keyboard or a synth? How do I get cool and different sounds for sampling. What kind of monitors... and on and on. I know there are lots of ways to go, I'm just looking for the easiest way and most affordable. Please help, I'm really frustrated with all the variables.
