I need a mixer...

Might want to look at a digital mixer.

I was just thinking about a Tascam TM D1000; might make sense if you used the rig for the studio and not in the field. It's a 16ch. digital mixer w/effects; 4 XLRs and a bunch of 1/4 inch inputs, and a few stereo inputs. It's made to connect directly with Tascam recording units, but otherwise its 4 buss, analog stereo out, and S/PDIF and AES/EBU digital interfaces.

Sonusman left a neat link about the S/PDIF stuff.

The Tascam mixer is about $500. You'd have to get used to a menu based user interface (I had a hard time with that and went analog), but its quiet. There are a few threads discussing this mixer.

Watch for the distinction between studio consoles and live performance mixers. Although I opted for a live mixer, I had to compromise a little to do it. Watch me upgrade three years out...
