to build some stuff for me. I was thinking about building some stuff myself but then I remembered I'm a really shitty carpenter and I don't even have much in the way of tools anymore. Instead of spending the money on tools I'd rather just have the stuff built right.

Any carpenters in the SW US area want to build some stuff for cash or trade? I'm also open to somebody out of state doing it and shipping.

I need a console to house a Ghost 24, patchbay and some rack gear, bass traps, a few gobos and odds and ends.

Anyone interested drop me a PM or email me at texroadkill@yahoo.com

Had me worried there for a sec Tex - betcha get a lot of reads outa this one... :=)) Steve

I'd be happy to build you a beautiful sleek 2x4 console table in exchange for the Ghost :)

Kidding, I couldn't make a square birdhouse if all the pieces were pre-cut by a professional.

PS, heres a description of MY console. I posted this on the Tascam forum as someone was asking about homebuit consoles.

Hello, everyone has thier own opinion regarding this I'm sure. Here is my own experience. I have built 4 consoles. My last one which I still use, has hollow 3" x 6" rectangular stainless steel tube legs, that are actually cable troughs. The 20 degree angled legs die into troughs into the floor. These legs support a frame span of 104" and have no feet. They bolt into hidden welded steel brackets that are also bolted into the floor troughs, and make the legs look as if they disappearinto the floor. :cool:This span required a welded steel 2" x 3" tubing frame which supports the following :3 Black laminate covered removable equipment decks, with various size and shape grommets. End caps fabricated from 10 hardwoods. A full length tilt out(hinged) very cool gloss black laminate covered hood, which covers a full length 1/2" dia. cable tie off tube on standoffs. This hood is angled and 2 part, one of which acts(temporarily) as an audio, video, and computer monitor shelf. It is the access to patch in mixers etc. on the decks. The hood has hidden latches and also acts as a cover for the rear of the equipment. On the front edge of the shelf is a full length 3 layer colored plex lens in front of strip lights that illuminate the equipment as well as the plex(pretty cool looking too). At the engineerside, is a full length 6" wide, 3 pc. padded black naughide covered arm rest. Hidden under the arm rest are 12" long modules that contain 1 hi-z instrument input with di box/amp switch, 2 headphone outputs with 3 option source switch and volume control each,(one module at each end of console), and a hidden lateral motion, track with removeable trays for various remotes, keyboards, paperwork etc. that also have other little atributes such as little lites, cable tie offs etc. There are also 2 removable monitor type arms(hi tech hospital stuff), one on each side of a center engineer, for other things such as BRC's, drinks, or what have you. Even a commertial guitar hanger bracket for playing at the console. I have a half dozen other little items. Such as a suspended belly rack mount cabinet with 4 partitions, with rack rails for 6U worth of rackmounts in each(computer, amps patchbays, etc) In the right studio(its in a bedroom right now )this console is quite stunning. Although the equipment I have in it currently is not. Someday But I designed it on CAD, it is superflexible, not real cheap to build(about $1200) and is constantly being added to, changed, modified and played with. I use special aluminum extrusions from a company called Stylemark for tracks, lighting, racks, mouldings, etc. It took 3 months, of fairly intense work to initially fabricate it but now, after 8 years, it still works great!!

do you have pictures?

i work for a cabinet company (day job). doing CAD design. i have built myself a simple one, but i assure you i can do anything. our site is www.dutchmade.com . my father owns it, so i have access to all sorts of cool tools like a CNC router. (for those of you who do not know what this is, it is a router controlled by a computer). most of the stuff we deal in is higher end. i dont know how much you have to spend. everything we do is custom, so, if you can think of it, we can do it. let me know if you are interested and i can draw something up and get a price.

Hi, heres the only one I have for the moment. Its in my temp "bedroom studio" There is no detail to it cause every thing is black. And black in digital is like audio in digital. There are no grey scales.:D And BTW foreverrain, I also am a cad draftsman. For a Union Store Fixture manufacturer. I design for CNC also. I design a lot of and detail everything you see in Macys. Showcases, backislands, perimeter, loose and freestanding. I have detailed 3 of their flagship stores, among 200. Everything. Steel, plastic, glass, architectural millwork, hardware, you name it, I've detailed it. Studios are a breeze compared to that stuff. Its just a room. Maybe not acoustic mathmatics. But actual details, seem pretty standard. But I love it. Thats why I designed my console with everything in it I could. I like to. And it was fun. Anyway, enough already.
This picture sucks. And it has even more things to it now. I've seen pics of your studio and it is really nice. Mine is not a studio. It is an analog music composition room experiment.LOL

rick,
did you create the design of the console totally yourself? or did you "barrow" ideas? i really like the idea of a sunken console desk like that. the one i made only took me like an hr to draw, create the cutting program (on CNC), and put together. it is nothing compared to yours. i am thinking about building a better one. i like yours better. ;)

Thanks for the input and the concern ;)

I want to get a sunken wooden console similar to the Argosy consoles but I don't want to spend 2 grand. I'd like to have it on heavy casters so I can move it around a bit.

I'm going to be using my large room for mixing/jamming/tracking and I'd like to push it out of the way while tracking/jamming then bring it into the middle of the room for mixing. I'm hoping to use D-Subs to connect the console to my recording rack that will be in a different room.

did you create the design of the console totally yourself?

Howdy lynn, yea I did. I wanted something that I wouldn't outgrow. And use alot of the stuff I have access to. Initially I drew it on the board. Then I transferred the basics to CAD and got creative. Trouble with creative is its easy to draw, difficult and time consuming to implement. Not to mention$ I'll post some pictures of the details and section drawings tonight(I'm digging a ditch for my water main which got broked) today Say, have you ever come across Stylemark. Cheeeeeeeeze! If not heres a link, since your into high end detailing, you'll appreciate this stuff. Its fantastic. 1000 extrusions, 500 colors 20 finishes, etc. Man, you can use this stuff in a Meg of ways. Hey, your studio is waaaaaay cool. Wish I had the room. But i really don't need it cause my insterests in owning a real studio have diminished. I'm more into the music now. I have everything(oops, no one ever has everything they want) I need pretty much. In, fact, music composition wise, I'm waaaaaaaay over the top on that side. I have double MSR-16 synched by a midiizer(plus the digital stuff I hardly ever use. Come to think of it, the only thing I still want to get right now, is a new analog mixer. Something like the Mackie with extension, or a Ghost. I want the midi mute, automation thing(more toys that need tender loving care!) Ha thats a joke! I barely have time to play guitar!!Plus bla bla bla here  excuse the bla bla bla!Hey what you use for CAD? I'm always intrested in that!

"I'd like to push it out of the way while tracking/jamming then bring it into the middle of the room for mixing. "

Tex, I hope you didn't mean the EXACT center of the room - center sucks, except for centering between side walls -

Also, if you're planning on a mobile mix center think about locating points, such as (crude) pieces of masking tape on the floor where two points of the desk go, once you've found them the hard way

Found this link yesterday after misplacing it for weeks, just for a good general reference

Lotta useful stuff in one place...

"Thanks for the input and the concern " -

Now that I know which man-tool you're REALLY hot for, the concern went away :=)

Know whatcha mean about prices for consoles and stuff - Unless you find someone like Rick who does it (at least partially) out of love, labor will eat you alive. I have all the tools and abilities, and will do my own, but don't really even have the time for that. No choice though, seen some stuff for $5 grand that I can buy materials for about $300 and build, and there are STILL things about the commercial ones I don't like, want, or need... Steve

hey fitz, you forgot to post a link. i think i found it though. www.stylemark.com . that is some pretty cool stuff. we get most of our details from raymond enkeboll designs. they have alot of fancy smancy stuff too. another one of our suppliers is art for everyday inc.

yeah, i think i have everything i need just after i purchase a new piece of gear. soon i spot something else that i need, and the process goes over and over.

we mainly use autoCAD 14 here at work. we were supposed to get upgrades to 2000 like over 2 years ago, but you know how it is. i do a bit of 3D rendering with inspire 3D and 3D studio max. mostly for presentation type stuff.

anyway, thanx for the comments on my studio. i really love it and am very thankful to have it. sometimes i just go hang out there all by myself. i sit in MY chair and just stare at the pretty lights. :D

Holy crap Lynn, I'm sorry, I spelled it wrong. Thats not the one. I've delt with them also. Heres the right one. Sorry about that. Its STYLMARK!! Aluminum extrusions only.
check it out.
http://www.stylmark.com/default.htm
Look under stocked extrusions.

And btw Lynn, I do the same thing. A big fattie and I'm in Studio Dreamland. Ha! Hope you don't take offence to that. I'm not all bad.:D
And Tex, I've got something drawn up along the lines your talkin about. All aluminum frames on casters. Part of a new design I've been tossing around. As a matter of fact, I just remembered, I have a steel tubing frame all made, sittin out back. Its actually pretty cool. But actually it wouldnt work for a ghost. Too big. This was for a digital mixer. I have a 3d rendering of it somewhere. Let me see if I can upload it to my wifes server. I have to go through shit to post pics or drawings here. Like someone said, its convoluted what I have to do untill I get my new computer.

Oh, BTW Lynn, I do R14 too!!! Cool. If you'll give me your email, I'll send you some neat files. I think you'll like them. Oh, you can download all the extrusion section files from Stylmark for inserting into drawings. I'll send some files that show how we use them. Some are toooooooooo cool. Most of my stuff is in model space, but some of the studio stuff will open in paper space, as thats where I place my border, to open viewports on the page in different scales. Works fantastic. Do you use paper space? If not, I can tell you how. It opens a whole new space. Got some little lisp files for easy onestroke punching in of commands. I don't use the buttons too much. I like to hit one key, and voila! I'm there. Quiker for me. I'm pretty fast paced sometimes cause workloads, so I take some shortcuts. have to. Anyway, enough bla bla.
fitz:)

hey rick- take a clearer picture of that console for us when you get a minute. I'd like to see the details you've mentioned. Looks very well designed and workable.

Damnit Steve, would you knock it off. I'm still laughin at your last post I read and my sides are gettin sore. :D How ya doin with the OT. Man, those hours can be brutal. I know from experience. Don't even feel like a cold beer, or rather 20. Or other medicinal remedys;) Ha, actually, I gave up beer 2 years ago, and I LOOOOOOOVED
beer. That was the trouble. Loved it too much. Hey, what kind of toys you lookin at?
Cool ones I bet. I stopped looking at the moment. I decided that I have to many already that I havn't even hooked up. SHEEEEEEEZE, what a moron. My wife says it all the time. Too much stuff just sittin around gathering dust. So, thats the next priority for me. USE IT or LOOSE it. To my wifes ebay habit! Ha!
fitz:)
Oh, PS, Dan, as soon as my wife will upload these for me, you can see them. Remember though, this is in a little bedroom, NOT a studio, and theres dust, a few spider webs etc etc and this is not a SSL:D Its my toy. Although I am very proud of it cause its my attempt at building what is my solution to what I think a console should be. However, there are lots of things the photos can't show you, but the section drawings can, if you can interpret them. They're pretty detailed though. You would have to load them into autocad to zoom to all of the details on the drawing. I would have to convert every single one of them for viewing here and theres over 50 details for the console alone. Not to mention,3 elevations, plan, and vertical, plan and longitudinal sections. It takes 5 "E" size sheets to plot it. But I'll post a few. Anyway, she said she would upload it tomorrow morning. SHE gets the host space and BIG POWERFUL computer for her ebay business. I get the shitty ole 133 with no ftp stuff.:(

No not the absolute center. One end of the room has a brick fireplace on the short wall so I was going to use that at my back to help diffuse then add some absorbers to the sides of it. If I can put together a few more absorbers/diffusers I was going to add those to the walls on the sides of the mixing postion. If I get really lazy I'll just buy a bunch of moving blankets and hang those where I need them for whatever the task at hand is.

Thanks for that link. There's some good stuff there.

Rick- I hadn't really though of using steel. Weight would be an obvious issue and then there's the whole tooling aspect. I'll have to look into that a bit more.

I did find a friend with some decent saws I can use so maybe I will have to do it myself, dammit ;)
