I need to expand my sonic palette, and I was wondering, what would be a good one for about $500 used.

I would prefer it to have spdif i/o but it is not a determining factor.

Cyan,

Man you've got to consider Gigasampler! For that kind of money, you can get Gigastudio 96, plus about $400 in samples. Tascam/Nemesys has a sale going on till December 31st. Is there a reason that you're specifying hardware rather than a software sampler? (CPU power, need to perform live, etc....)

thanks rev. E

I need a hardware one because I dont want it to interefere in any way with my CPU.

My personal opinion, but I still think that you'd get much more mileage from a software sampler. For $500, you could upgrade your CPU and STILL have money to buy Gigasampler and a small sample CD. My 1.3 GHz Athlon hasn't missed a beat yet running Gigasampler 96, Logic and a few Waves plugins. Upgrade that computer of yours!!! :)

BTW, I noticed that you have a four channel Sytek preamp from the "Rap, beats section". How do you like that unit. I've seen several of them on Ebay, brand new or almost new. I'm kinda curious how they sound, if they're as good as they've been reviewed. If you have the Burr Brown option on channels 3 & 4, do you hear much difference with on those channels?

E-MU ESI2000
try and find the cheapest you can get. It's a killer for the money, bang for the buck, a green latté when you really need one..

yes chriss,

Increasingly, it seems like I am going to go with E-mu and most likely with the esi2000 box. I have seen it for about $425 "buy it now" on ebay, so it should not be too expensive.

Rev. E,

Can you post a sample of some killer drums from gigasampler. I am getting a sampler so that I can have drums and maybe some vocal oohs and strings, but the drums would be the biggest selling point for me.

As for the sytek. Man, that was one of the best purchases I ever made. To think I would have traded it for a blueberry mic. If I had done that, I would never have forgiven myself.

The description of its sound that comes to mind is sparkle. It truly sparkles. It also adds a certain "spittiness" to vocals that I die for. It makes even my shure sm58 sound great.

You can hear it here.
