I know I'm good but.....

I've spent about an hour today filling the dings and splits on the body and will be priming it up for a swirl paint job. I've always done swirl jobs with borax and enamel but there is talk of a new method without the borax and temp control. This could be an ideal chance to try it out. The paint comes from Germany so I'm going to try and find some this week...

Nah it's a very rough and ready put back together. So far about two to three hours no more. Max another two to get it playing but I'm making a project of it for the kids.
 
Dang, I'm going to smash all my guitars just so I can send them to you to get fixed! That's great work.
 
Don't worry.
My dad's a TV repairman; he's got the ultimate set of tools.
I can fix it.

On a more serious note: if you can repair that properly, you would make for one heck of a marketing tool for yourself in before & after pics.
If you go for it, you should make a vid of the process and include a demo in the end to let people hear how it sounds after it has risen from the ashes of ignominy.

I've been rockin those shoes for years, but never thought to put a bagel in my underwear.
 
Have watched "Fast Times" dozens of times (even got a free "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" t-shirt at the movie's premier in my home town, way back when), and never noticed the bagel before!
Ahhh... the joys of cannabis and selective memory...

Had a bit of time this morning so finished filling the dings on the body and sanding them back. Looks a mess until I can shoot a white base coat later today. Then it will be the marbling process...

Also wacked some frets back in it. A much better fret job than the previous attempt I hope you'll agree. The polishing and final shaping will be done just before finishing.

Checked that the neck pocket is still true and that everything lines up for the bridge when it goes back. Everything OK so far. About another 45 minutes spent today...

Shot a few key coats on it this afternoon. Did it in the yard as I didn't want white overspray all over the shop. Luckily the insects stayed away long enough. The thing is beginning to look like a guitar again.

Still waiting for the marbling paint to arrive from Germany so looked into the fittings today.

Definitely needs a new scatchplate and I don't want a stock one. A nice smoked mirror effect would be good and I have some sheet plastic thats just the ticket...

It's a standard strat pattern so I have the template to hand fortunately. A quick few minutes on the router and it's good to go...

Off on a weeks break from Saturday so probably nothing more til week after when the finishing starts. More then....
 
I gotta say this is pretty cool :) I wish I had the skill to do this sort of thing myself... I have saved a few guitars from trash bin death before, wouldn't mind doing it again soon.

Haven't had much time to spend on this recently but I'm doing some finishing next week so I want to get this in the line with other stuff.

The neck was back together with new frets installed but had some nasty "iron" marks and other stains from it's previous neglect. A little oxalic acid solution and a light bleach should improve things?

Shot a coat or three of clear lacquer on it to seal it off.

Before going further with the refinish I wanted to check how much of the original hardware could be salvaged. Cleaned all the rust off the parts and wired the sucker back up. Stuck on a set of strings and did the roughest of setups.

IT WORKS.... All parts operational and pickups still in tact. Sounds just like a Squ9ire strat...

Next up breaking it down again and doing a wacky paint job that the kids will appreciate..

Those are the Stanley ones from the early eighties. Real work horses and good steel that holds an edge well. The recent Stanley stuff is nowhere near as good..

You're right there.
My da used to buy well and buy once.
Things change though. I think we're on about the 3rd orbital sander this year. :facepalm:
