I keep waking up dead.....

OK, this should be the last re-post of an older tune. Once I get advice on this one, I'll have an idea what to do with the rest of the tunes I'm re-mixing or re-recording.

I'm pretty sure I've already posted a version of this. But I cut out some dead weight, re-recorded a couple of instruments and changed and re-recorded the vocals. So, it's almost a new tune.

Let me know what you think and what you'd change.

The guitar tones are near perfect for the song. I think you've got your mix right near perfect. Nothing I noticed. Personal pref would be for a thumpier kick to move the subs just a bit. Little push @ 40 or 60 Hz...
Louder I make it the better it sounds.

I really really appreciate that. My most common "mistake" is writing songs in possibly the wrong key, in the sense that I did want to belt this out a little more and make the vocals grittier, but I think it's a semi-tone or even a tone too low for me to do that. But I agree with you on that.

It sounds real good to me. I really like the distorted guitar sounds. Drums sound terrific - kick drum sounds superb. Vocals too. Levels on everything are spot on.

These are great mixes. If I were to do anything differently I'd do a fairly deep, narrowish cut at around 3000 hz on the vocal tracks and then bump them up in the mix. This is due to the characteristics of your voice and might be something to mess with on other mixes. The vocals bite just a little and set back in the mix a little. This may get them a tad more forward in the mix without adding more bite.

Again...love the vocal harmonies in your stuff.

I like this tempo a lot, the halftime feel stuff always gets me going. Reverse solos at 1:45 are like a promise of things to come, somewhat foreboding.

Thanx a lot Trip. I agree on the reverb. I thought this tempo and style of tune could get away with being a little wetter than what I'd usually do for my mixes.

I sort of used "The Mirror" by Spooky Tooth as a vague reference. Not that I went and listened to it, but just kept it in my head while mixing this.

I will absolutely try that. I don't think my vocals are bad, but I do think that they're usually the thing that keeps my songs from being "great", as opposed to just "good".

Thanx C. Yeah, I love playing these kind of 16th note on the hi-hat tunes. The solo is actually a combination of the solo forward super-imposed on top of the same solo backwards, which is why it sounds like 2 solos at the same time.

I think that a lot of musicians tend to underestimate that tightness is so, so, so important to making anything sound good and don't properly develop the skill. So much energy is lost through a sloppy performance. People always go on about how these early punk and heavy rocker type bands like Motorhead couldn't play but I don't think that's true. If they couldn't play, they wouldn't have had any of their edge.

On this track I also like the vocals but I do not like the rhythm guitar tone that is playing the arpeggios much. It's too dark for me.

That's interesting. I didn't have a lot of time to work on it, but I did open the project earlier this afternoon and did a quick sweep on the EQ. I couldn't get any frequencies to stand out with a "boost" sweep and couldn't hear a difference when I cut from about 2800-3000hz. But I do hear what you're saying about my voice and it does pierce a bit up around those frequencies. But now I wonder if you can EQ a certain frequency out of someone's voice if that frequency happens to be a major part of someone's timbre. You know what I mean? I'm just thinking out loud for now since I can't work on it at the moment. But I'm going to work on it tomorrow and find out. I think of someone like Axel Rose (not that I'm comparing myself with him, nor do I try to sound like him) who also has what I would call a piercing, thin voice. How much would it change to find his frequency and cut it?

Anyway, that's tomorrow's project.

Thanx man. I have nothing against that guy, he does what he does well. But I also think he has this mis-guided obsession about analog and digital and all that shit. I don't know how much of that is "Placebo Ears".

As far as tight playing, I totally agree with you. I think it's totally important. Getting a "human" feel has nothing to do with playing badly. That's "un-talented human feel".
