I Have Two Pre Amps Which One Should I Get Rid Of?

Why the hell would there be $1700 preamps out there if a $100 preamp did the same thing?

A friend of mine here in the Hollywood area, who is a fantastic engineer as well as a world renowned musician even told me "a $10,000 mic will do you no good unless you have a decent preamp".

He is completely on the mark and I will name names if I have to.

wtf is froth?....

dude, we aren't even talking about $1700 preamps here.....we're comparing a DMP3 (about $75 per channel) and the Soundcraft Compact 4 (less than $50 per channel)........

A $10,000 mic through a DMP3 will still sound great. Granted, preamps make a big difference (once you get to at least the $500-$1,000 range), to say a quality mic won't do any good on a normal pre is utter bullshit.

Because those are all budget pres. You will hear a definate difference with a really good pre! It is night and day!

Either that or you have no ear for sound.

I find it funny that people rave about the subtle differences between things... and I KNOW they are subtle... unless you compare a radio shack to a grace... and yet, usually the musician/recordist hasn't a clue MUSICALLY what is subtle and feeds these boo-teek preamps a pile of dung, when it comes to recording. In those cases, you might as well save your pennies for music lessons, because all the equipment in the world won't salvage some recorded dung.

If you can, keep both of them. If you need the cash, keep the mixer, because that can have some other uses. The DMP3's a great cheap preamp, though, and if you find yourself wanting to record more channels simultaneously in the future, you may well regret getting rid of it.

Keep both. A mixer's handy for monitoring. DMP3 is an unusually good preamp.

Well I dont think youll be able to get very much money for the DMP3 anyway. Its a nice little preamp, I used one, really clean sounding etc etc. It seems to be a favorite among all the lower end preamps.

If its new enough that youre able to return it to the store and get a full refund - do it! But youll be lucky to get $70 used... is it worth it to lose more than half the money on something that youve hardly even used?

I cant believe you guys let this post go with no comment....Just to let you know that a DMP3 in good condition will almost fetch full price....they regularly are bought and sold on the board for $125 or so....only $150 to 160 new...seems to me to hold its value pretty good....

Really? Sorry if I messed up my facts I had some gear I was getting rid of and (at the time) wasnt seeing many DMP3s selling

Anyways - best of luck with what you decide to do. As others have said - You can never have too many mic pres!

Well I've been testing out both for a few days and I can hear small differences in the Souncraft Compact 4 vs. the M Audio DMP3. The Soundcraft has less sibilance [ie: less harsh esses], and the M Audio has more body in the vocals.

Now the big question is how will both of these pres do with the upcoming Studio Projects TB1 mic I'm getting? You see right now I'm using a rented Apex 460 microphone because the real microphone I wanted which was a Studio Projects TB1 is on it's way from the factory. I have to return either the Souncraft Compact 4 [$149] or the M Audio DMP3 [$170] by June 2nd to get a full refund. So far I think I like the Soundcraft more on vocals but that judgment may be clouded because I'm using the only mic I have and don't know how it will sound when I get the Studio Projects TB1.

Basically I'm using the Apex 460 mic and if I take back the DMP3, get the TB1 mic and it all sounds shit on the Soundcraft... What the hell am I going to do?

If you had to use a Studio Projects TB1 with either a Soundcraft Compact 4 or an M Audio DMP3 which one would you use?


P.s.
I don't want to spend money keeping a pre that only makes a small difference that would be otherwise unnoticeable. But I do want to keep it if it will have sound with the new mic. Maybe some of you have the equipment to test it out.

Really, just kidding here. But me thinks you might be making much more over this than is warranted at this level of equipment
because...

Turning the mic (either mic) 15 degrees or moving it an inch would swamp more than the difference in pres.
How about the consideration of which will be more usefull to the way you'd like to work, mixer or pre?
