Ok,

I just got an iMac, and I play guitar and sing, and i want to record some stuff with my electric. Now using the webcam mic doesn't sound very good.

I heard the best way is to get a preamp and plug it into my computer then my guitar. but then i hear that preamps are "at cheapest" $100!

That is BaNaNas...

Is there no other, or "cheaper way"?

Remember i'm not going for studio quality just something to record on, or at max, making a CD for myself.

ya really a interface would probably be the thing you need if your not looking to spend to much (judging by your reaction to $100 preamp). If you want to record vocals and your guitar then you are better off just getting a cheaper interface with 1/4" inputs and plugging straight in from a effects pedal. You will have to understand that this hobby or career is an expensive one. Good luck.

There are cheaper hobbies you can get into. (just don't look at bowling, golf or model airplanes... they're FAR more expensive than recording.)

Remember that for $1,000 you can get a studio today that would have cost $5,000,000 in the early 1990s....

You can still buy a cassette-based portatrack for $150.

this should work
