 I have around 1800 dollars to start with . I am extremely new to this and have been just basically loading myself with all the information as I can . I have a good understanding of computers and most instruments yetI have no clue what to buy to get started . What kind of sound card , computer software and synth board/workstation should I start with . Also I want to record guitars directly to my pc not mic them up what is a medium to directly record the signal into the computer is that the job of a rack effect for example one line 6 would make or something of that sort . Someone just do your best to tell me where to start . I want to be working all digital by the way .

On another note the style of music ranges from Metal to classical and punk .

What do you have now? Do you already have a decent computer (specs would be nice)? Do you have any equipment?
There are many factors to determine how you will allocate your hard-earned mony.

I have a near new computer which I built myself . Stock onboard shitty sound card . 512mb SDRAM , AMD 2100+ , 52x CDRW , Decent nvidia Gforce Card , 40gig hard drive . I have NO recording equipment at all besides a decent pair of headphones . I do have many instrument rigs . Including a line6 half stack , smaller line 6 amp , Behringer Bass amp and about 10 different guitars and basses.

I know that $1800 is burning a hole in your pocket, but my words of wisdom would be to wait and not just throw money at things. Take a lot of time and read around on this board. Look at what is suggested to other people who ask this same question. Read things that Massive Master or Blue Bear or Harvey Gerst (to name a few) post. Listen to their advice to others before you just throw money into something that may not really be the best for you.

MyDeadRomance, I agree that you should wait a short whlie...

You will need to figure out .....

which programs you are most comfortable using

what soundcard will best suit you for now AND the near future

which audio monitors to purchase

do you want one video monitor or two video monitors

(if the last question is applicable), which video card do you need

do you need to mildly sound treat your room

etc...

You don't need to buy a new computer. You can install at least 512 more gig's of RAM (you will want to have at least a gigabyte of RAM total). You will need to add another HD (hard drive).

The RAM will cost about $50 after rebate.

The HD will cost you about $50 after rebate.

You can download demo versions of different multitrack programs from their respective sites.

On the budget that you have proffered, I would suggest that you look at the ALESIS M1 ACTIVE mkII or the KRK ROKIT 5's & KRK ROKIT 8's.

Once you make your To-Buy-List, you should post it so we can all take a look at it.

Well thank you guys so much and I never really thought of it but you are right by saying I need to find the things I am comfortable with software wise and just feeling things out and looking at the boards before I make any crazy purchases I will regret . Thanks for your time .

Difference between one and two video monitors besides the obvious ?
