Ok. Here goes.

I'm re recording one of my songs now, and the guitar is pretty good I guess. I used a xy spaced pair miking on the acoustic around by the 12th fret.

I just did some vocals last night. I'm using my friends rode II. I set it up on a boomstand a little bit above my mouth. I probably sang at least 1'-2'ft away.

The song is kinda of with breathy vocals with some strong parts, and then a falsetto part at the end. My question is should I just sing closer to the mic and turn down the preamp? Then just adjust the mix later on ? Or just stick to what I did...for sensitivity purposes?

I'm using an audio buddy for the preamp.
Probably a crappy regular sound card. (it sounds alright)

that's about it. I hope some can lead in the right direction.....

oh I'm using Cubase SX 2

the best solution is to have a dead room, so you can get close and wisper, and back up 4 or even 5 feet to scream if you need.

(unfortinately, not everyone has a good room. in my home made vox booth you can get approx 3.5 ft)

experment to see how much distance you can put between you and your mic before the room sound gets annoying.

other option:
do 2 takes, one loud, and one soft.

try making a temp vox booth out of hanging bed sheets. like curtians in the middle of the room, 4X4 floor to ceiling if you can swing it.

i'm sure other people will chime in on this too.

Damn Vocals ...

question about recording vocal in 2x4 feet room.

Hey, poupoudamn/walters/whoever - why don't you quit hijacking other people's threads? Start your own if you want to ask a serious question.

Oh, I know why you won't - because you're an ass.

if anyone cares I can send you what I recorded for constructive critism....

You have a few options:

1) Get pretty close to the mic (4-6" or so) for the whispery and falsetto parts. Then back off a little (12-18") for the louder parts.

2) Track with an outboard compressor to smooth out the levels a little.

3) Sell your $600 software and invest in a good mic, soundcard, preamp, and some room treatment.

Thanks for the input guys and gals if any!

I will try to play around more I guess.

I'd say get close up to the mic. Especially as you want the 'breathy' sound.

The further away you are the more the 'sound of the room' gets recorded along with your voice. Now in a pro studio that may be fine, but in the home environment where conditions are not perfect recording the room might not be the best idea.

Good luck.
