I have 20k to spend on gear...

What should I get?...

I have most essentials you need for a studio... Let's say I needed a brand new computer... (i guess ill go with a top of the line G5) right?...

Now... What interface would I get?... Also I would want a digital mixing console that I can control pro tools with... Im not 14 anymore dudes! im 20... lol I don't know why I just stated that but okay.

So for a computer, interface and digital mixing console what would you get?... Also would I connect the outputs of my interface (which one should i get that works with pro tools?) to each channel of my digital mixing console... these plans to get these things are all in the long run...

What would you be your ideal set up if you had 20k to spend on a computer, interface and digital mixing console just to control pro tools with the console?...

I'd first think about acoustics treatment and monitors.

Are you looking for new software too? Why not just stick with what ya got? People seem to buy Pro Tools for one of two reasons... They've been accustomed to it for years upon years... or just because it's "Pro Tools"

You can get much better 'bang for your buck' with just about anything else out there.

But, the new Mac, (psst They're Intel based now) Apogee converters, Euphonix Controller, and a lunchbox filled with good 500 series mic pres...

I haven't beem counting... what's my $ Total?

Myself personally? The biggest UAD-2 pack I could afford...

I can spend money like no one. :)

Can I keep going? :D
 
Get a full microphone assortment ..........now that all the money is gone save some more.
 
You can't go wrong with lots of Neumanns and Summit stuff.
 
Give it to me. I will buy a bunch of stuff, test it to make sure it's good and then ship you the things that I think will work for you.

With the exception of me it looks like everyone tried to give you valid advise.

As for me I have a hard ennough time deciding what I woyuld like to buy when I get a spare $100.00 let alone planning your destiny;)

Theres many good choices for interfaces. I personally would not buy anything with built in pre's. I would get a good board if you don't have one. A used ghost can be had for a few grand if you look around. Use those pre's until you can get a few nicer ones later. Get Good monitors. At least plan on dropping a grand to 1500. Get monitor stands. Are you doing this all in one room or do you have two rooms? either way if you are not going to custom wire the walls think about a 16 channel snake or so. Whirlwind used to be great. Don't know anymore. $1000 for software is a start.
If you get 16 in's worth of good named interface I have spent half of it for you at least. Good cables and used mic's 2 sm-81, at4050, a d-112 3 or 4 md-421's, a couple royers, nice tube ldc. one good tube pre, a stereo mid level compressor. more software plugin's. Go with good used gear and it will remain worth what you paid for it. Except on the monitors. I would buy them new.

Good monitor for a good price,,,,, maybe dynadio BM5A's

Boom, I broke your budget.

OH I did not see you are going protools. I would get a protools controller but look into getting your converters from somewhere else. I would got to digidesign and see what's compatable. I know apogee is, but I'm not a protools guy. I would pose the user interface and converter question to the protools forum. They are gonna have better answers for that part of things.
Like I said. I would rather have ad/da converters than a setup with pre's built in, because I want to be able to swap out pre's for years as I can afford better. You will have to see what they offer. It's my understanding that thier own converters pale in comparison to apogee and other high end stuff. What all do you plan to record anyway. Just your self or the public also?

B-4 deciding on acoustical treatments, computer interfaces, pres, mics etc.,
it would be worth your while to come by my house 1st (cash in hand of course), do a lil jammin' & recordin', eat some pizza and drink my specially made, refreshingly tasty, "KOOL-AID"! Afterwards, we can go out and buy me
some.....errrrr....buy you some new gear!;)

How's about a nice Studer 2" 24 track with Dolby SR , a nice 96 channel SSL console, a few decent comps, gates...a reverb or two and a nice 1/2" , 30 IPS deuce to master onto. :cool:

If that shit was good enough for Pink Floyd, Zeppelin and the Beatles, it ought to be good enough for you too.

Please excuse all of the wannabe comedians. Whatever you do don't drink QQ's 'kool-aid'.

If you have the cash to drop on this you're not going to get a straightforward answer here. You're essentially asking for free consulting. If you are serious about getting a serious answer then be very explicit about your goals and expectations and offer to pay someone to help you.
 
With all due respect to wheelema, I don't wish to be included in his list comedians because I am in fact quite serious about taking the analog route and here's why; The prices on pro level analog gear from days gone by have fallen through the floor. 24 track, 2" machines can be had for $5K or far less, depending on their condition and the desperation of the seller to get rid of it. One inch 16 track machines with very near performance to their 2"/24 track brothers go for even less. I, for example, currently am offering a 16 track, one inch machine in like new, refurbished condition for 2 grand. Another member of this board recently picked up a 1/2" 4 track machine in good condition for 500 bucks. Great quality analog Mixers with completely pro specs and facilities often sell on the used market for 5 to 10 cents on the dollar.

The point I'm trying to make is that one can put together an absolutely amazing analog studio that may have cost a quarter of a million dollars originally for 20 grand today. There is no joke, except for the poor souls who have been coaxed into selling off their amazing gear because of the common belief that digital recording is always better when in fact, the final product often sounds no better or even worse when it has been put together on a computer based system that is always one failed RAM stick away from disaster. The joke if any, is on those who buy into whole new = digital = always better mentality.

How many threads have been started here by people who have had their entire project killed because of a failed hard drive or a hung application? Thousands have. The reality is that digital systems are no more reliable then their analog ancestors and in many cases, far less so because you don't just lose the take or track your working on but your entire life's work if you haven't set up a militant back up regime.

And the point I made about legendary bands tracking on analog gear is all true and the quality of the sound speaks for itself.

Anybody that thinks they can buy old used analog gear and use it without becoming a repairman is crazy. It's like buying an old car - you can't buy a 30-50 year old car and hop in and expect it to work like a new one.

True. Maintenance is part of the learning curve and like cars, there are back yard mechanics and professional ones who can provide service, if and when needed. The basics of cleaning heads, learning to solder, and even basic trouble shooting is not beyond the grasp of the human mind to learn. There's tons of free on-line learning resources too. Same thing goes for good audio engineering. Buying the gear, whether analog or digital requires discipline, enthusiasm and time to master. No one becomes Mutt Lange or George Martin over-night.
