I actually had some time that I had to figure how to fill today... I'm not used to this... yard work's not it...

So I thought I'd compare a SM57, MD421-II and 609S on heavy gtr

I marked the grill so each mic would be pointed at the same speaker location, directly at the center of the speaker, and 1 inch from the grill

The clips are similar ramblings and some chugs... absolutely no additional processing or EQing other than limiting on the output buss.

Here's the cips...

SM57

MD421-II

609S

I recorded my 5150-II, 4X12 Ampeg V4 cab loaded with V30s.

The cab is wired to handle various speaker configs and 16ohm x 2 was used (two 8 ohm in series)

Nice - thanks for the clips. The MD 421 is the clear winner of that shootout for me. Smoother and breathes a little better than the 57. The 609s sounds scooped to me.

its almost the polar opposite of the 57, so i guess thats why people like them together? i'm just glad i'm not the only one who got that "scooped" feeling from the 609, kinda relieving. the thing that isn't relieving is now i need to get some cash together for a 421 :D

That illustrates why I always EQ the SM57, wet to tape,...

which (BTW) works pretty well. Anyway, I'd EQ any mic, down to tape, and the SM57 is no exception. The SM57 seems to lack high frequency response, and be a bit shallow in the lows. I EQ it for most purposes, & it sounds fine.

I think the 421 sounded flattest, and the 609, I'd agree sounds scooped or hollow in the midrange.

I hate yardwork, too!

the 421 and 57 do really pair well together...

depending... tucking the 57 just under the 421 or the other way around can make the difference...

i'm not the only one who thinks the 609 is just a touch overrated?

timboZ,

this isn't about mic placement... but no doubt a different position delivers a different result...

my clips, I hope, give some insight into the sonic differences between these mics...

each mic was 1 inch from the grill and on axis with the speaker coil cover... I was very careful to position all three as close to the same as possible... YMMV

thanks for listening...

I liked them all, with the SM-57 being my favorite (maybe it was what you were playing) it sounded good.

i Liked the SM57 i think shure area great mics It dounded clear and crisp (p.s. nice playin) lol

I thought all sounded pretty hollow and dead.. maybe it was the amp or the amp settings. The MD421 sounded most hifi, but all tracks sounded too muddy for my liking.

I like the 421 the best. The 57 does have a noticeably worse high end-- and it almost sounds nasally or something.

Thanks for the listen... but this wasn't about distortion quality... it was nothing more than my putting up three commonly used mics and hitting record...

I'd really like to hear an unprocessed clip of yours...

Very cool of you, sir. Thanks for takin the time.
Oh, and yard work.....bah...pave it n paint it green.

:D

the sm57 sounds lacking in highs and lows to me. sounds like the md421 and 57 would be a good combo for a high gain sound.
