...for the gazillinth time, but I'm looking for an additional mic pre-amp. (I know, I know)
But I think I can be a little more specific than "What's the best mic pre for under $200!"
I record primarily solo piano, of the large grand type, and ocassionally vocals of the sultry female varitey. Once in a great while my own voice as well (high tenor to low alto)
What I'm striving for is a sort of period sound. Sort of "Cole Porter-esq." Or "Nat King Cole-ish." Or, at the risk of modernizing the period, sort of "Harry Connick Jr-y" You know the sound, slow, soft, warm, not too airy? But with a clear top end. ;)
At any rate, I'd like to spend around $1100 to $1200 for one, maybe more if I had to. Dual channels is a must!
I'm pretty sure I have the mics to achieve this period sound, and my current mic pre, an ART PRO MPA, Dual Channel-Professional-Tube-ified-Microphone-Preamplifer-Extraordinaire, is ...OK, but I'm looking for something a little more... I dunno, "higher-end"? Less "pro-summer" more pro.
Any ideas?

Check out some online vintage recording equipment shops, Ive seen lots of Neve's and stuff, well into your price range. Try looking at the Manleylabs site.
Enjoy your shopping!

Peace,
Dennis

Universal Audio now makes a single channel version of their UA2 or whatever its called, and it is based on the mic amps back in that genre, I beleive. I hear it is fairly colored, but may be right up your alley.
The RNMP, when released, will supposedly have some vintage RCA colorings, which might also be right up your alley.

Also, forgive me for forgetting this one, but for a rolled off, darker sounding pre try the Neve3415 that is racked by Brent Averill, they are $1349 and are real neve modules and therefore very resellable. They arent as bright as most neves, and may serve you QUITE well.

the best bet I agree is go with an older standby. Brent Averill has some great prices on the neve. Or check out Vintageking for maybe an telefunkin V72 OR V 76/80. They will run you about $600..00 for the V72. Then you have to have someopne rack it. You can buy them already racked I think for $1200.00- $1400.00. Buy a "good preamp and it's an investment!

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. I think I'm leaning towards the Brent Averill racked neves.
