Okay, AKG mic from EBay...I sing into it. Then...hehehe...there's a cord that comes out of that and goes into my computer, and I have no clue what type of soundcard it is...wait...hang on..."SB Live," if that means anything to you.

I track and do all FX in CoolEdit 1.2. No outbound gear.

And yes, I have a direct satellite link that monitors all responses to any thread that I have started. I'm alerted by NASA, and then I just check it from there.

lol

Rick - You're gonna' have to get meaner...but as always, I MEAN it when I say "thanks."

Thanks for giving a crap!!!

Ahhh CEP 1.2... hence the inability to remove the verb from the vocals.... I used to mix in CEP a lot. It took forever and I got damn good at listening for minute changes every time I added an effect. Then I got damn sick of it and moved on.... anywho, here's some CEP tips that will greatly inhance your mixing experience....

Make 2 tracks for your vocals. 1 dry and one completely wet with whatever reverb... then adjust the mix accordingly. It takes up a track and HD space, but it is the only way in CEP 1.2 to do any "real time effects".

Need an onscreen mixer? open up all the faders and leave them open... bam.. instant oncsreen mixer... (I"m sure you already knew that one...)

Hope those help... best of luck... hope the cablel guy doesn't fall on that satellite dish...

Okay...okay. You didn't really say that. But I do need to clear something up since I've got the tracks up right now... You're saying guitars up, vocals down...or the other way around. Thanks Fed.

chris,
the songs sounds great........it seems like you got mixed reviews about the drums, i liked them......i like the voice thing at around 1:07, unexpected, but kinda cool

the hiss is the only big detractor.......you need to get rid of that........the acoustic sounds fine in my opinion, that's all subjective though...some people like'm thin and crisp, others deep and 'woodsy'.....they sound fine

damn the hiss!

That thing about the 2 vocals... occurred to me about a week ago. I'm not the swiftest of birds. I'm doing that from NOW ON!!

The second thing you said was intrigueing...don't assume I know anything. "Open up all the faders..." Can you elaborate? If you can, you can increase your posts by 1. Seriously...PM me if you can, b/c that sounds like something I DON'T know.

Thanks

JR- if you elaborate, post it up here........this sounds like something i could use, but am unfamiliar with this 2 track idea

Sure, I'll pad my stats.. plus, it bumps your tune and hopefully someone else finds the tips useful....

I can't remember specifically, because I dont' use CEP 1.2 anymore, but you right click on the volume indicator in the mixing view and the channel fader should open. Move it to the side and open up the other channel faders. Line them all up and you've got your on screen mixer... you can also open up the master fader as well... oh.. and pan faders... Not as pretty as my Nuendo VST mixer, but it works.... The mixer in CEP 2.0 isn't any different or anymore useful than the method I just described. The CEP 2.0 faders don't follow the envelopes... pretty weak... anywho... CEP 1.2 rocks. Blows the doors off of Sound Forge ANY day.. not just yesterday... but ANY DAY. HELL, I WOULD STILL TAKE CEP 1.2 OVER SF 6.0 ANY DAY.. EVEN IF THEY INCLUDE SOME WATERED DOWN VERSION OF VEGAS AUDIO!!!!! doh.. got carried away there... Vegas audio does kick ass though...

Levels and mixwise... ah yes. The ol' Sears Boombox tone knob, cranked up to 11...

8kHz octave is accentuated, meaning either 1) hats/rides too loud 2) 4kHz octave is low in the mix 3) both

It sounds like a 4k-gutted mix with those exaggerated 8k's... that's really the only thing that's on the "irritating" side in the mix. Lessee where it goes from there... like your fingerpickin' an' stuff...

HOLY CRAP!!! That kicks ASS!!! I'm so glad you said that, b/c I never would have thought that more than 1 would open at a time.

Man, I wanna' be you. Can you also make stuff not sound like crap?

hehehehe...Thank you VERY much for that...I had no idea.

Oh yeah, I'm posting a new version...so DON'T LEAVE CHAD...or anybody else, for that matter...(it's not there yet).

I have a quick and easy solution...

get n-Track... :p

and man... you need a new soundcard. You can usually get a Delta 44 on eBay for around 150. It's the best bang for the buck... and n-Track’s only 50 bucks.

Also.. it sounds like you may need a mic pre... where are you located at...? I may be able to send you a little something to help you get started...

I used to use CE (can't remember which version.. Pro or 2000 or something) anywhooo.. when I went to n-Track there was no lookin' back... real-time effects... non-destructive wav editing... VST capabilities... (I dunno if CE has that) and easier to use then my underwear... (trust me.. my underwear can get pretty confusing sometimes... :D )

Seriously though.. that's exactly what I meant earlier by "when you can record it well". I used to do all my recordings just like you... through a SB soundchip and using CE... and they used to sound the same way... Tinny, hollow, cheesy, muddled conglomerations of crap....

and now... they're crystal clear, full-bodied, muddled conglomerations of crap.... :D

WATYF

P.S. I put up a new mix for ya... with lots o' vocals, so I don't wanna hear any more whining... :p

It's simple... you have 1 dry track. You copy that track and call something like vocal_wet.wav. Import that into your multi-track session. Apply your reverb to the vocal_wet track 100%. Don't hold back on me now... then it's just a matter of mixing the tracks.

I used to do the same thing when I only had 1 multi-fx processor to work with. I did it with a 4 tracker and an 8 tracker.

REMIX REMIX REMIX

WATYF: If you continue to educate me for free, you're NEVER gonna' get paid for your expertise!!!

Again, I'm blown away that you took the time to post that. I'll look into all of them...'specially the soundcard, b/c the more I'm here, the more I'm hearing that it matters. I will go listen now...IF YOU LISTEN TO THE REMIX I JUST PUT UP...

THEN WE CAN GO JOIN THE OTHER 500 PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO DOWNLOAD TOM'S SONG.

And whoever did the star thing, even though I fear it won't last, "thanks." I know it doesn't matter and all, but it's better than a kick in the nuts.

Chris,

i can't believe that you've recorded all the tracks i've heard with a sound blaser card..........they sound great considering, but you should really step up and get a Delta 44.........it's not even comparable..........i got one about two months ago and the difference is amazing...........as you well know, my mixes are a bit ameteurish, but that is not because of sound quality.........the Delta 44 would do wonders for you man.........maybe even get rid of the hiiiiiiiissssssssssss

Heckuva a good job getting rid of the hiss and the high end sizzle.

The harmonies are nice too.I think I heard your daughter in there for a couple of them.;)

Good tune Chris.

Dude... MUCH freaking better... got rid of some of that hiss... (some of it.. :p ) and filled it out much better... this is a huge improvement..

and yes.. the soundcard is vital.. especially since it sounds like you're running direct into your computers "mic" port, which is a big no-no. :p

expertise???

***WATYF looks aroond to see who you're talking to...

whuh???

better...

...yup a bit of hiss still there in the left channel... but...

You've eq'ed the left/right guits differently, ain'tcha? A good way to separate the guits... but, for some reason, the one on the right sounds louder than the one on the left... esp in the first few bars.

The snare has the Gloria Estefan... "But The Words Get In the Way" thing... sounds a bit odd to me, but it's a matter of taste... you could see what it sounds like with a touch of 'verb... (but not the full blown Phil Collins special :p)...

On the outro at 4:40, when the guitar isn't playing... is it possible to mute the channel to get rid of the hiss... for a bit?

Very nice song... vocals would shine with a better mic... but this is still lightyears ahead of my mix... (which isn't really a mix yet :p still tracking, damn it -- all you fast movers like SLuiCe, chris and jamal... write and sell 7,000 hits while I'm still layin' down the frog sticks on my one song!!! ) ;)

Nice song, btw... love it (I'll buy my first pair of Wranglers and practice "yeehaws!" with more stuff like dis!)

Chad

Ya' know Chad, you really are pretty amazing. Like in Jamal's thread you noticed the vocal panning and the delay (on the correct side) of the second track...and you pick up on EQ differences that I can't even hear AFTER I'VE DONE 'em.

The reason Jamal and I post a lot of songs is because we can't hear how fucked up they are, so there's NO INHIBITION.

If I ever hear anything you produce (and I'm not as young as I used to be, so you should hurry), I have a feeling I'm going to be floored. (BTW - Sluice posts a lot of THEY ARE GREAT THE FIRST TIME songs because he's possessed by Satan).

Powder...I missed your earlier posts...thanks...just bought a new soundcard. Aahh computers, is there anything they CAN'T do???

Thanks ya'll...you accomplished more in 2 hours than I could in 2 months.

Chris--I can't believe anybody would be so blunt. Did he really say that? ;)

I always say, "self criticism is the best criticism". Good to see you've taken that to heart! Only problem is--when we can re-write our own reviews, think of all the critics you'll be putting out of a job. (Rock critic--now there's a job description for you!) :D
