King of Bling
I didn't write this song, but I've been a fan of it for years, because almost everything about it is "wrong," from a producer/radio standpoint. It was written by a fellow Texan (Bruce Robison), and it breaks most of the rules: it's NOT uplifting, the lyrics actually matter, and it's over 5 minutes long. In short, it's like 90% of my tunes, lmao.

Well, thanks to the Dixie Chicks, the song got cut, and I think it's in the top 10 on Billboard's Country charts as I write this, lol.

THE WILDCARD FACTOR SHINES THROUGH.

DISCLAIMERS:
1. I injured my hand a few weeks ago, and my index finger is now useless...I'm literally learning how to play the guitar again; I left some of the timing issues untouched

2. All but 1 of my mics are loaned out to a friend right now, and my "good" computer is down, so this whole thing was recorded with an SM58 through an SBLive soundcard. - HAVE FUN!

3. I can't play the violin, but I still play it better on this than I play the guitar.

In all seriousness, I've been bummed about my hand, and I haven't been recording anything (even though I owe some people here some vocal tracks), so I NEEDED to record something...ANYTHING. If you listen, thanks...but this one was just to get me off my ass... Mix comments would still be cool, though - this is the first day in quite awhile where I actually recognize most of the people on the front page :D

I know this one!! My wife is a rabid country fan, so i take all this stuff in subliminally:D sm58 and an sblive? I officially hate you now!

LMAO."being crippled is funny" :D I'm a sick bastard!

Thank's, Chris!

Peace

Rick

That's no wildcard Chris, just a solid freaking tune.

It's a cover right?

My girlfriend is in love with your music by the way...bastard.

well it's about time chris. hold on, i'll go listen on my monitors.....be right back.

who did you get to do that backups.....SHES AWESOME!..
oh yeah the song is cooltoo.....is that a harmonica....??.and i heard weird ass reversed guitar on the solo??...right???!!
guitars are real clean and nice..the highs seem real crispy.

i like songs that tell a good story...

you should do one of those sometime..

:D jamal

WILDmotherfuckingCARD! Man, this is going to sell a million copies!

I didn't make it down to my monitors cause i gotta go outside to get downstairs right now (long story), so I'm listening on walkman headphones through the soundcard on my motherboard, and it sounds good. I like the backwards guitar stuff. voice sounds great, as always. you're masking the injury pretty well cause cause the acoustic sounded pretty much like signature chrisharris guitar playing. those little hammer on's to the secong note during your solo are a dead give away :).

welcome back! i was worried that you were going to die in the cave. i'm convinced that place is actually the city of dis.

Hey Rick - Man, that avatar kicks ass, lol. I appreciate the listen...this song literally gives me hope as a songwriter, lol. I feel like calling up record companies and going "SEE?!?!?!! there IS a market for 5 minute mid-tempo depressing story songs!" Anyway, yeah...it's a 58 and an SB Live; on the headphones, you can really hear the noise reduction I had to use, and there's STILL hiss...lol.

Jake-Owa - Yeah, it's a cover. Thanks for listening, and tell your g/f I've seen pics, and I'M a fan, lol. :D

erichenryus - I predict that monitors will reveal a bunch of noise and some weird EQ thing that happens about 1:40 into the song...I still have no idea where that came from...like somebody hit the "bass boost" or something. Oh yeah, and there are some pretty screwy sync problems...as usual...but you don't need monitors for that, lmao.

JB - Eat me.

[edit] - Thanks for listening ericH... yeah, JR#97 refers to it as my "signature lick," ... heheheee...it's the only thing I could EVER play, so no great loss. :D The rhythm stuff is what I'm having trouble with, but it'll happen. Again, thanks.

Merciful Zeus!

Could you go into more detail about how you recorded? What other hardware did you use and what software?

Holy Apollo! It's so rare that anybody asks; yeah...I'll be happy to.

All the acoustic instruments and the vocals were recorded through the 58 running through a little DMP3 pre-amp, then through the soundblaster (ick) right to the hard-drive. I track and mix in CoolEdit.

The electric part of the solo was just a Mexican Strat through a cheap Lexicon delay patch, right to the card. Same for the bass (sans the Lexicon).

I guess that's it. All of the EQ and compression and Reverbs were done on the computer using the onboard FX that come with CoolEdit. One of the great things about CoolEdit is that it works pretty well on slow machines...my other computer is on life support, so I recorded this on a 5 year old "emachine" that's about a whopping 200Mhz, lol. Anyway, I wish I could blame the weirdish high end artifacts on the mp3, but it's the noise reduction I used...the 58 just doesn't give a very clean (or loud) signal, so it ended up being pretty hissy.

Oh, and if there's anything good on here, it's my daughter, Jaimee. :D

Thanks for asking, man...makes me feel something that's not bad.

Oh yeah...drums... Mostly a 3 piece acoustic set of loops that I downloaded from the net...I honestly can't remember where I got it. It was free, though. :D

David - thanks for listening. Yeah, it's an actual chart-topper right now (Dixie Chicks) lol. But the version that I fell in love with is the songwriter's version. It warms the heart to see a 5+ minute song on the radio.

thanks again, guys.

you have seemed to escape the wrath of waldo....

crispy song, lawyer man.

so... the finger will heal...right? ..and back to "normal"?

Hey Chris,
I havent read any responses yet.....so im probably gonna sound redundant........

This IS a great song. You sing it well too. I like the Dixie Chic version too........ great song. The acoustics sound strong, Vocals are fantastic, and the rest of the band......fitting. There's quite a bit of hiss but it wasnt too offensive. It sounds like some of the high freqs could be tamed throughout though (guitars, cymbals), and i'll bet that would squeeze out alot of that mic noise and pre-amp hiss. It sounds like the cymbals might be just a touch overcompressed..... a tad high-endy.....& sizzlish .....:D  The vocals in this are beyond excellent. You have totally wired recording your own vocs...... very tasty!!!!

beautiful work man.........

.......gw/5

Again, I don't care for americana that much (if I may call it that)...I'm pretty sure I don't like the Dixie Chicks version...but I do like this.

There's something in your voice that touches me.

Warm mix. Great job, Chris!

I thought you said you couldn't play because of your finger???!!!

lieing Bastard...... :D

I haven't heard the Dixie Chicks version...this is a cool song man...good recording....
Didn't seem to last 5 minutes...good tunage man...
I dig the reverse guitars...very cool
Mandolin would be awesome with this.....

2:37-2:39.....vox.....Hoooo-me.....too bassy man....or too loud....booming in my monitors.......was it a punch in?

well....I had to nit something...ya know? :D

Geezis Chris, that's better than the dixie chicks ever did! Useless finger my ass.....by comparison, all five of mine are useless (three on one hand, two on the other). Enough with the disclaimers! You lawyer types are always doin somethin like that! Superb job.

Happy Sunday and stuff. Okay, I know it's just a cover song, but I took a stab at another mix. Thanks for the help.

Mixmkr - "The Wrath Of Waldo" - lol....sounds like a bad Star Trek sequel. Actually, I got permission from the writer (Bruce Robison). He's a very cool guy with a strong dislike for Nashville, and he answers his own email. There's still one song on my site that I didn't have permission for, but I'm not telling which one :D. Thanks for the crispy comment - I'm so paranoid about my increasing deafness that I never boost the highs on anything anymore, but when you hack the shit out of all the lows and the mids, well...I guess the result is the same, lol...hopefully, I fixed some of that with the remix. As for the finger, it's apparently permanent, but I'm over it. It's not like I was a great picker beforehand. Thanks for asking.

Guernica - Yeah, I can chalk the hiss up to poor technique in recording; I have no business blaming the mic. I just get sick and tired of recording a whole guitar track or vocal, and then realizing later that I clipped it in some tiny spot - unlike tape, the results are NOT cool when I clip on the computer, so I've been recording at levels that are very safe...and WAY too low...which translates to hella' hiss. I've been toying around with the idea of using an outboard limiter pre-card so that I can just wail on the acoustics and the vocals, but it'll probably just add more noise from the limiter, lol. I HATE RECORDING...hehehee... Ever used a limiter to record with? Anyway, I hacked all the highs off of the latest in an attempt to address some of what you were hearing, and I appreciate your time.

Pedullist - You're good for this BBS...stick around. You'll probably have more posts than me in about another week, lol. "Warm Mix," ... from your post time, it looks like you heard the remix.

Joro - I didn't lie, lol...did you HEAR some of that shit? Thanks for catching the weirdness @ 2:37. A fader got pushed up WAY to far right there for some reason. "Was it a punchin?" lmao - dude, my whole LIFE is a punchin.

Bd - you're too kind, but THANKS!! :D
