I got a free mic

Hey I got a free mic, catch is it was made by radio shack(33-3042. It sells for $40, anyways my friend sold his dj equipment and gave me his mic.. He said its good for stage he never tried recording with it. I havent used a mic like this since I had a porta studio.

So I plugged it in and recorded talking/freestyle real quick to see how it sounds. And I noticed it wasnt as sensitive as my condensor, which could be good for recording when noise is present, I mean I had the tv on and it didnt pick it up. It was a few dbs quieter then my mic, that might just be the phantom power. This mic has more lows then my mic, My mic makes me sound a little higher then my voice is. I like the fact I can hold it too, but thats besides the point.

What would be a good use for this?
besides a emergency replacement, and stage. I know most people have several mics that they use for different reasons. I only rap and heard that a good dynamic works good for that. Ts probaly isnt considered a good dynamic, But is there any spplications thi would be usefull.

The best use I have ever found my old Rat Shack mic is as a control room talkback mic.
 
If I had a control room, That would be perfect.

So im guessing put it in the closet with the rest of the outdated gear.
 
Well....It might be OK for micing toms or snare....I use quite cheap mics on my Toms and get a pretty good sound.....

Drums are usually in the frequency range of most cheap Dynamic mics.....

It's up to you whether or not the mic is worth anything. If it works for vocals, or whatever you would use it for, then keep it. If not, then don't use it. I don't see why you would need to ask us? Especially if some of us haven't used the mic... :confused:
 
Use your ears man. Record some tracks and compare it to any other mikes you have. Try to match the levels as close as possible so you don't fool yourself and then normalize to finish matching the levels. I have a rat shack mic that sounds pretty good. I've heard some really crappy rs mikes too though. See how well each sit in a mix too.
 
I asked since I heard alot of people say there junk.
I messed with it for maybe 1 minute and told you what I thought.
I plan on just using it as a insurance policy.

But I will record with it to try it out, I used a radio shack mic with a 4 track years ago and it wasnt that bad but that was analog.

I was wondering if it would work good for stage or if anyone had expierence with it, Its the most expensive mic they sell which doesnt say much.

I know alot of mic companys use simalar capsules and the insides are the same. I just dont know much about this mic maybe ill do a session later.

What I expected off the back was distortion and noise and I didnt hear that, other then that I didnt do much with it.

Heres something I did this was like a 5 minute session... Its the second verse, it works ok its just low, I have to set my gain to around 70%.

exactly what i was thinking. who cares if other people think it's crap? if you like how it sounds that's all that matters. try it out on stuff. if you like it on your voice why would you put it in the closet just because someone online told you to? if it sounds better than your more expensive condenser than don't just use the condenser because it's shinier or costs more. use what you like best.
