I've been reading several forums about gear etc and I just don't get it because is too much info about gear that I just don't know what to buy or even how to use it....

So, with a budget of +/- 3000 (except mics, and PC/Mac if needed :D ) which set up you recommend me to record a 4/5 piece band (drums, bass, guitars, vocals,,, perhaps keyboard  ) Live or Studio? (I mean studio, like going to a big rehersal studio and bring my own gear to record)

I don't mind gettin gear that I don't know how to use now, because I think eventually I'll get to understand how to use it practicing and testing a lot,,,

Thanks so much for your help.... :)

If you are going with a latop, you need one with a fast processor, large hard drive, a good amount of RAM and a good AD/DA USB/Firewire audio interface.

Look around (search for laptop DAW) and you can get a feel for what they cost. My quicky search showed me one (PC laptop) for near $1,800 -

There are Firewire and USB connectable audio interfaces that allow anywhere from single instrument in/out to multiples (2, 4, 8, and up) -

As for outboard gear (compressors, mics, preamps, et al.) - sorry, I have no expertise there. I know they are valuable and understanding what you need is very important, so I will leave that to the pros.

I have personally been able to work with a very low-budget solution - a Toshiba laptop with a 1.4Ghz processor, a small amount of RAM, 40 gig hard drive - no special audio interface - just an 1/8 adapter to connect simple mixers or instruments - I have been able to accomplish quite a lot of low-end recording and production with this inexpensive system.

I also have a workstation at home that is much more hearty - 2.4Ghz processor - 1gig RAM - typical SoundBlaster soundcard (with midi joystick port) - still no multiple instrument I/O - but again, with clever use of multitracking - you can get around just about any project.

Hope that helps!
