i kno right i was talkin to him yesterday..... dude got $300 worth of mic for 99 thats a hell of a deal right there if u ask me... lol i still hope he gets the digi tho......
 
ight yo here's the deal musicians friend called me and said they not gonna give me that for that price and since i already received the mxl3000 and mxl992 i can keep them for free and they put the money back on my credit card, so i got 500.00 worth of mic's for free wit carrying cases and shockmounts lol
 
not unhappy at all i think i'mma just do wut i originally wanted to do and get some hardware
 
I wouldnt go as far as to say your lucky...id sell them mics and get a descent one..
 
The 3000 is a pretty good mic. I don't know much about the 992 though. If they were free, I'd keep them and then your just back to where you started but with 2 new mics.
 
yea tru i got the xlr cable comin in the mail so i'll see how they sound when that gets here wit my mic stand and pop filter

depends what your budget is....but a great mic no matter what..would be something like a SONY C800...or a neuman u87.Of course these aint budget mics.I guess It all comes down to what you trying to achieve.If you just fooling around then the mics you described and many like it are good.But for professional quality there are better out there.Its my opinion that If you are making music and recording vocals no matter what genre MIC and Pre AMP are very important.Just like if you gonna get PRO-TOOLS..if you aint got pro-tools HD then dont expect top notch sound.I mean its cool to record into a pro-tools LE if you have a good mic and pre-amp,but In order to get an optimized sound you gonna have to have it mixed down by someone like a big studio,or someone who specializes in mixing down and has all the top of the line plug-ins.Shit some plug ins cost more then some peoples lil LE systems.
AGain I guess it all comes down to what you are trying to do...Me personally If Im gonna put out a project its gotta be the best i can get my hands on...thats why I go to a studio (Big CONSOLE lots of outboard gear) I cant afford $15,000 for an pro-toolsHD3 system...so I pay a studio who has the big console and there expertise.Sure anyone can learn how to use a mixer..a DAW...but it also takes a certain talent..someone with a good ear..someone who can help you get the best quality sound..

That's also untrue, Michael Jackson recorded Thriller with a Shure SM7 ($350). Wu-Tang recorded a lot of their stuff with a SM7. What makes a mic "great" is not the name or price tag, it's how it compliments the source. Saying for professional quality there are better out there is very misleading. A U87 is not going to automatically give you "professional quality", with any mic the signal chain is just as important if not more so.

true,but most professionals with these mics have a good signal chain and aint recording in there bedroom.........In music there is always exceptions to the norm,as far as what mike jackson used i cant say,but its hard to beleive he only used 1 type of mic especially knowing his multiple takes and techniques,and unleess it came from his mouth or engineer..its hard to say..example scratch mag wich is cool,but when the producers have a list of what they use..some of that is misleading,and you get variations from publication to publication and even from the artists..some one day say one thing and next day it switches.....


Again These questions are like a double edge sword....simple question was is a good mic?...should my response be..what do you consider good?..Know I just tell him what I think are two good mics..also my fault for not being more specific as far as saying if you aint got these you cant make good music or good quality......BOTTOM LINE U-87 and SONY C800 are two of the better mics on the market..not the most expensive either..i didnt mention telefunken or nothing like that....

Just thought Id let you know that you need to do your homework,michael jacksons album thriller was not recorded with a shure SM7 it was actually recorded using a neuman u47 and a m49.....
