Here's another track Mike put down a bass track for over the weekend. I also remixed the drums a little. Once again, I would really appreciate any comments on to the overall mix especially with regards to the drums/bass because they are the focus of my remix.
I'm just getting used to mixing with my monitors and it would be good to know how they translate....

The song is I Do and can be found here:

Ido,
My single significant suggestion would be to swap the drum & bass levels, ie: more bass less drums.
Additionally, but not importantly,I think you need to pull back on the guitar FX a little too, unless that's going to be your signature sound.
I reckon it needs a sustained open chord acoustic in the mix too.
Again, another quality piece in your canon.
Cheers

Sorry man...missed this the other day.. :o
I agree wioth Ray on bringing the bass up a bit. There is plenty of room for it to be a bit louder. No real nits other than that. Nice tune man. Smooth. Lyrics fit the vibe of the tune well, and your voice is good. God job man.

I listened twice, on AKG headphones and Tannoy Monitors.

On the phones I dont like the drum sound, it was like "In her eyes" before you fixed it. On the monitors the drums actually sound fine. Go figger.

The song itself: very good. Nice and soothing, good stuff.

Something I noticed both on cans and monitors:

There is something on the vox thats not working for me. I described it the other day is "phasing", maybe thats not the right word. I can hear an artificial sound, maybe its reverb choice. I get this sound too on my recordings and I wish I knew how to get rid of it. Its just a lil fuzzy. I cant explain it well, I wish I could because I could fix my stuff too!

Yup, another quality tune. Well done and extremely nice.

rayc - thanks for the positive feedback. Sounds like I need to remix this the same as In Her Eyes - up the bass and down the drums. Makes sense as they were tracked and mixed one after the other originally with similar settings. Both guitar tracks have chorus and you're the second one to recommend a different tone/effect/guitar (first version received the same rec). I was working mainly on bass/drums this time, but need to look at the guitar tones too.....
Dogman - thanks for the listen, glad you liked it. I was wondering if this thread would just fade away...lol....up the bass on this ok.....
DavidK - thanks for listening and the positive words. Think I'll remix this to see if I can get it to sit better in both phones and monitors. The "phasing" might be something inherent in the processor - it's a different patch on this tune but the same machine. Wonder if it could be the mic?
hmmm.....this tune needs some more work....
Thanks for listening!

Your voice is great man, very smooth and Clapton like, although I think that was already said a few times in the other thread :D The song reminds me of some of his stuff too, so I can hear another guitar, maybe another acoustic like recommended above for the chorus or even a fun little bouncy lead part in places.
Excellent song :)

Hey Gerry...

Listening now...
You do seem to focus a lot on the rhythm guitar part... The drums are clear, but under a little, and the bass is essentially nonexistent in this mix, it has very little definition or power to drive the groove. The guitar is higher than I'd place it, and a little honky in the 500Hz-1KHz range...

Youre acquisition is getting quiter and smoother though, you're definitely improving on that piece.

Nice tune, comfortable and warm. Very fittign for the lead vocal style. Nicely done!

Hey Llarion, It's proving interesting mixing on my new monitors (TR8's). Both this song and In Her Eyes were remixed on them and the concensus was that the bass was low on both. Guess I need to get used to the monitors more....
I'll be remixing this one and I'll keep the other points in mind as well..... I want to get it as "right" as I can.....Glad to see you around again and thanks for the feedback!

I have remixed this one using the recommendations above:
1) Brought the bass up and eq'd it to take out some boominess
2) Took the guitars down and panned them a bit more center
3) Took the drums down and eq'd the snare up a bit
4) Used a different reverb patch - same one as In her Eyes remix

I replaced the original copy with the remix - it's now the only version there...

Check out the song I Do at the link below and let me know what you think of this mix...

Much better bass sound, to me. It seems to sit in it's own pocket now. Good job man...

Better, more balanced...

Definitely a good song, I listened to this several times the other day and it was actually in my head driving yesterday. :)

Sounds fine, but it did before too. The drums? Fine, it sounds a lil too much like a "drum machine" sound but they work. I probably am listening too much to them as we have talked of them before, in the car I wouldnt even notice them. :) I cant tell much of a difference in the new mix, mainly cause I liked the other one too.

Whats the signal chain on the voice and what reverb do you use?

You have a nice collection of work on your soundclick page. Plenty to put out a lil CD, do you plan to?

Thanks Dogman, Llarion, DavidK for taking the time to listen and comment on this last mix.

This mixing/monitors thing takes a lot of practice and time to get used to. It sounds a bit different on my truck stereo than on my TR8's. The truck has more drums and less bass - so DavidK I hear you on the drums. These are not the same drums I used on In Her Eyes though. They are brighter and seem to be more present in the mixes.

My signal chain on the vocals for both I Do and In her Eyes is:
Rode NTK->Alesis24->ADAT. The downmix is where I use a PCM80 Vocal Hall patch and a Triple C compressor custom patch. I boost the 1-1.6 K range just a bit to get it brighter. I used the Concert Hall 2 patch originally, but I think this other patch is better on the slower stuff.

A CD is a possibilty in the (distant) future......

Thanks again to all for listening...now I got to get back to the war over at the head cuttin' thread.....

very nice tune.. the vocals make the song as they should..

to me the mix is slightly bottom heavy and there's a general lack of crispness to the music.. the vocals are fine in both sound and performance .. it's really not a big deal though.. a song like this probably wouldn't be played through massive sub woofers or anything.. sweet tune.. drums are a bit repetitive repetitive repetitive.. not a major concern but some slight variation would add something for me, but since I'm not the target audience it doesn't really matter what I think.. could be a hit in it's genre.. very nice!

Thanks B.Sabbath for the listen and the comments. I think I might still need to play this on more systems, to try to find some kind of happy medium between the bass being audible but not bottom heavy (i.e. learn my monitors). I hear you on the drums ;) ..... Thanks for the positive comments too on the vocals and the song itself.....

Very nice song and vocal. I think the guitars would benefit from a lower effect level... the guitar tone is very sweet and they're well played but the strummed rhythms would be more articulate with less effects.

Tim

Tim - Thanks for the listen, and the positive comments. The guitars are rather "effected" with chorus. Maybe I'll look at retracking one of the guitars and go either acoustic or use less chorus...
