Im stuck between a Peavey 6505+ and a Krank Krankenstein or a Krank Revolution. Can somebody please post samples of any of these? I can't find any good ones online. thanks.

I have a 5150 and a Revolution1. I have never played a Krankenstein, but I understand it's brighter and has more gain than the Rev1.

I absolutely love the Rev1. It gets the lions share of playing time and I have several amps:

Rev1
5150
3ch Dual Rect
Mark III
Cobra
Legacy

The 5150 is a looser distortion, but the bottom growl is fabulous. I had a 5150II, but sold it. I prefer the 5150 voicing to the 5150II voicing.

The Rev1 is much much tighter and very articulate. The Rev1 may take a bit longer to get used to. It can be very bright and harsh, but also thick and lush. The Sweep Control is very cool.

Here's some clips of mine

ok thanks so much. You talked me into a 5150. Those clips of the 5150 are more like what i want in a sound than the krank. the 5150 is more heavy sounding. thanks a ton. Which 5150 is heavier sounding? the normal or the plus? and ive heard from some people the 6505 sounds different. is that true?

I prefer the 5150 to the 5150II. The 5150 voicing is a bit lower and I much prefer the 5150's low end growl. But the 5150's not as flexible with the shared EQ.

So you've never played through either one? $1500 bucks based on somebody's clip or jaded opinion. You got a sister?

I've bought several amps having never played them before buying.

You can start by yanking my krank! :)

no i dont have a sister smart ass. ive been looking into both of these amps for almost 6 months. Ive done a ton of eliminating and finally ended up with these 2. and then based on his clips i realized the 5150 has more low end then the krank so i chose the 5150 and yes im going to buy one without ever playing it.

It's one thing to just buy based on online reviews and advice. But when you can actually hear it (which is usually the purpose of going to try it out) then it makes a big difference.

Although recording techniques can change the sound a lot so nothing is as good as actually being in the room with the amp but still, you get a good idea what it sounds like and what it's capable of.

one doesn't just run out to try Mark IIIs, Cobras, Kranks, Bogners... in Clemson SC, so replying on clips and comments is a must but understanding the limitations.

Not trying to be a smartass here, but wouldnt it be the best to just go down to your local music store/retailer and try them out? Unless you live in a small town, then its totally understandable.

Mike

the closest music store to us is kind of a long drive and then they dont even sell the 6505s. im putting out a limb just buying it but im about 80% sure ill like it.

Not sure where collinsville is, but theres a GC in OKC and Tulsa...... deffinately worth the trip for that kind of investment. If ya do order online, make sure there is a return policy and find out how much shipping you will eat if you hate it.

yes there is a gc in tulsa. but they dont sell the 6505s. they sell other peaveys but not the 6505. and okc is a 2 hour drive.

I bought my 6505 without playing through it also. However I didn't really have the option as it's a long long way to the shop, a journey I wasn't about to lug my guitar. And trying it out with a completely different guitar seemed kinda pointless (and I think they'd have trouble pulling a replica off the shelf for me to try out with without changing the pickups there and then). Plus by the time I got there I was determined to bring it home with me. However, I have heard plenty of recordings of a 6505, watched plenty of perfomances, and read plenty of reccomendations, and I was not disappointed when I got it home.

And even if I was dissapointed, and came on here saying it sucked, you guys would tell me I'm wrong anyway :p

the only thing im confused about now is whether i should get the + or the normal version. Ive heard the + has less gain and not as much low end.

Where are you buying 5150's for 1500 bucks? I got a real nice Mesa DC-3 I'll sell ya, only asking 5 grand. I'd say for the rep the 5150 has and for the fact you can get one for $500 all day long on ebay it's not exactly a huge risk.
