I am in need of some desperate advice

I am creating a small studio so i can record solo music and possibly music for freinds i know here in town.
I have a guitar stack and a bass amp and a full drum kit.
I am getting a computer soon and that is the way i want to record.
Here are my questions
What sort of mic should i use to mic my guitar and bass amps?

Would a normal non-powered mixer work without a power amp for just recording to my PC?

What device would i need to go from my mixer to my PC (USB?)?
and How much would it be?

Any answers would help me a lot i have just started recording music and I am very new to it all.

You'll need several mics....a good dynamic mic, some good condenser mics, a kick drum mic. Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD421 or MD441, Marshall MXL603, Studio Projects B1, ATM25 for kick and bass.....spend at least...hmmm....$600.

Yes. If your mixer has mic preamps. Probably won't sound that great recorded though. A Soundcraft M4,M8,M12 mixer would do the job and give you a S/PDIF output to go to a sound card with S/PDIF input. $400-$600. Or better yet get a good outboard preamp or two. $500 - $1500.

A sound card, preferably with balanced inputs, and some cables that have ends that match your mixer outputs and your sound card inputs. $100-$200 will get you there in reasonable fashion or more depending on how many simultaneous inputs you want. A nice Motu interface with Firewire would do you nicely for $800-$1200. The new Yamaha 01X control board looks pretty good for $1500.

Better get a bunch of memory for your computer...and a good fast processor. And you'll have to isolate your tower from your recording room or you'll record a bunch of fan noise and hard drive click. Well I'll stop now. Get out your credit cards and get a second job. Oh, and use the Search button for about 360 hours. Good luck! One more thing, don't ask what's the best device for $200 around here unless you want to be mercilessly pummelled. Just a friendly suggestion. :D
