Hysterical Zombie

The vocal's got an aggessive upper end frequency that you could modulate.

You know, you could put everything except the vocal on a buss, and deal with that with its own EQ etc. Why? The vocal isn't getting heard sometimes. But this tune very much needs the vocal to be heard. The thing that's crowding the vocal is the snare particularly and the drums in general, but it's also the EQ you've got on the vocal.

Last comment: the vocal needs more meat, more muscle, more balls. How do I know this? Because the outro works like a charm. But when the vocal's playing, it comes across as thin.

Dobro has pretty well nailed it.

There is everything to like about this track: it is dynamic, original, energetic and engaging, and extremely well performed.

But my greatest concern is that the drums sound as if they are in a completely different room. I reckon I could live with the EQ on the voicE (notwithstanding Dobro's observation), because it fits well with the other instruments. The band has generally a very big sound, but the kit sounds very roomy and dry. There is a point towards the end of the song where there is mainly just a kick (or a tom), and that seems to sit in nicely. I'd like to hear that blend through out.

This song is badass, I like it a lot. I almost wish the verse vocals were sang a bit lazier. The drums are huge, but the rest of the mix feels dead center. At the very least I think the vocals during the chorus should be double tracked. Again, I really like it, would love to hear some more production value in it.

Thanks guise - the vocals are going through an AC30 amp head sim. I like the distortion, but I guess maybe it's a little close to the guitar and bass sound because of it. Hmmm...

Funny thing, the drums and guitars and vocals were all tracked in the same room, but have various post processing. Do you think maybe little bit of verb on the master might help glue it all together better?

Dis guise not in total agreement with the others because I like the distorted vocal because it suits the song - there is a slightly unpleasant edge to it that may be notched away with EQ.
Cool intro. jungle drums that have a bit of Bow Wow Wow to them.
Terry Pratchett's version of Zombies seems to match yours: Reg Shoe is a sharp suit and convertible getting a minion to wait in line at the iPuud shop...
I like the solo sitting over to the side - lets the bass rule.
I didn't hear the drum issue - but that's not unusual as my ears are not too fine tuned.
A little bit of reverb on the master often does wonderful things. Try before you buy.
The sweeping "horn" ending is cool too.

I agree wiht htose who find the drums spread in a big room, and other stuff is very centered - only the lead guitar sounds in the same room as the drumss. The vocal EQ is strange when you first hear it, but it works.

Thanks, Ray. Real horns are real. James played trumpet, trombone, mellophone, alto saxaphone, flute and clarinet on this record.

Bit of a boxy drum sound.
There's a piercing element to the vocal during the chorus. Some high freq.

Love the feel of the song. Love the vocal performance.

Kick has a bit of a cardboard sound.

Love the tone on the lead guitar on the right. The lead vocal tone was a little thin, but I thought it fit the mix well. Loved the harmonies. Vocal performances all around were great.

I think my biggest complaint are the sections where the power guitars come in. I want them to smack me in the face, but they don't. There's no "umph" in them.

I really like this one. Maybe one of my favorite tracks of yours I've heard. Maybe because it seems a little more straightforward on the surface anyway.

Love the intro...thought it was primus for a sec there. :)

The mix as a whole was maybe a little boxy sounding when the drums and distorted guitars are all really going full bore all at once, but I still liked the sound. I thought the vocal sounded perfect and was at just the right level myself. It might be cool if the guitar(s) was/were panned a little wider?

Cool.

Boxy...

Okay. I guess I am using room mics all wrong. It's a 450 square foot room with 13' ceilings, so the drums shouldn't really sound boxy.

Midrange buildup, perhaps? Maybe something an EQ notch might address between 400-500k?

First of all .. love the gritty bass sound. I would prefer the guitars a bit more upfront. Just my preference.
The song is great. Also like the drum sound and playing.
Overall... kickass job.

cheers

Yes, I mentioned that 4 or 5 of your songs ago. I hear it on every one of your tunes. Everything's awesome, but there's a boxy blanket over everything, and the snare really emphasizes it.

Not to say that your songs, arrangements and production aren't incredible, because they are.

Boxy is a good word to to describe the mix. I think it's also a good sound for most of it.
I would try to figure out where it's coming from and how to correct it but only do so on the choruses, especially on the vocals. The lo-fi, "queens of the stone age in a garage" sound works well here.

Chorus is catchy; it just needs to open up a little more.

*edit*
I'm a little disappointed that the word "sheeple" never came up. :D

To start with...KILLER TUNE!
I love the arrangement and the performance is very tight.
I agree with ray c that if you could beat down the ice pick frequency in the vocal the effect sounds great. The drums sound good but I agree that they sound like they are in a different space than the rest of the band.
All of the suggestions in the is thread are tiny nits.
Great rock and roll song supercreep!

I agree with what some of the others said about the boxyness, but I mean it's a good jam. It's don't listen to anything similar, but probably just needs some tweaking the ol effects to get it where you want.
