Brand new to HR and been "attempting" to get a project studio going. My main recording gear consists of a Behringer sx2442fx sub grouped out to my beater Korg D1600. I hope to be entering the 21st century soon with a DAW. OK enough of the bantering...I have a Gretsch catalina birch 7 piece (using only 5 right now) My toms (16in floor included) hum and resonate so bad when I use the kick...its awful! Happens only when I dial in my Audix D2s on the 10 and 12. I'm using LD condensers as overheads set 10db PAD and high pass only and nothing is picked by them as far as hum goes. Anyone think a little gating might help on the toms? If so, how much. I don't want them to sound dead in the mix. The plugins are in the KORG. Thanks all. Good to be aboard.

Tune the drums?

I agree. It's always better to fix it at the source than eq, gate, compress etc after if you can. Maybe the bottom heads could be tweaked a bit, that's where I'd think it would be from.

Yep. Tune 'em so they don't create those sympathetic tones to begin with.

I'm not a drummer, but I have a kit in my studio. A very average, mediocre kit. The best investment I made in drum tracking was new heads all around, and having a real drummer over to tune them.

That made a bigger difference than anything I had tried with mics and/or processing.

Then there is the big cheat and use moon gel, if all else fails.

I'd say if you're otherwise really happy with the tom sounds, use a gate.

If you're only so-so on the toms and don't mind them sounding a little different, tune the sympathetic ringing out.

I had a live recording done one time in which the floor tom rang in it's mic the whole show. We couldn't tell on-stage, and I'm not sure if the crowd heard it, but the recording from the soundboard was a little bit of music and a whole lot of hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. stupid fucking soundguys.

Tuned but I guess I'm faced with a trade off. The kick is really great in the mix so I'll leave that along. I'll have to experiment with the ranges of the toms till it stops resonating either that or go electronic........naah. Acoustic is awsome. Thanks for the advice.
