Huge MR-8 files

Hi all. Been a lurker of this forum for a while now, and have finally gotten around to coming up w/a query. I've recently upgraded my computer so that I can transfer files to it, and burn cd's, but the files on the CF card are huge -typically 20 megs for just two tracks. If I were to burn these files, I'd only end up getting 4 songs per CD. I know that there's something I'm missing here, and I've got my hunches, but I thought I'd ask here first before I go screwing with things. How does one convert/compress files so that they can optimumize space on a CD? Thanx in advance.
 
If you want to just store them on CD for backing up you could compress them with a zip utility. If they are completed songs a CD typically stores 70-80 mins of audio.

You could also compress them to MP3 format but you loose some audio quality.
 
Hey Joe, I've never had a problem with file size when burning to cd. If you convert your tracks to a stereo wav file then burn, you end up with a large file but audio cd storage if I'm not mistaken is based on minutes not file size. So if you have 8 five minute songs you should be able to fit them on an audio cd with the right amount of recording time. But like I said I've never had problems going straight to cd. Good luck Pj
 
Try This

I hear a lot of folks using Ntrack, I use cool edit pro 2. I get the files from the MR8, then mix everything down to an MP3 on the PC Using the Cool Edit Pro Software! Then you can get around the normal 20-23 songs on an audio CD.
I think that is what you are missing!

Something ain't right here man. CDs usually hold between 750-800mbs. If your songs are only 20mbs do the math.
Maybe I missed something?
 
Thanx for the tips all. You ARE right kdgospel; I fluffed when I had initially posted. I guess I was a little miffed when I saw that songs I was copying onto cd's were only taking up a couple of megs of space, but mine were 8-10 times as large.
Anyhow, I solved the problem. I downloaded a program called 'Precision CD WAV MP3 Converter' made by Roemer software, from download.com, and converted everything to MP3's. Worked like a charm, and real easy to use too. It's free to try, but after 30 days, or 100 conversions -whichever comes first- it's only $20. Well worth purchasing!

big files

mp3 are fine but they are a lossy form of compression, you will heare the difference in quality...

you should be able to burn stero .wav files with no problem, and you will not loose any quality, should be able to fit alot of songs on a cd, i get 10 to 13 easy.....
 
I agree totally with dave. Something is still not right. I may be wrong about this but a music file in wav format is approx. 10 mbs per minute (4 minute song= 40mbs). If you are burning onto a 750mb CD you should get approx. 18 four minute songs on one CD in wav format.
