Hi all. I've lurked around here trying to learn about home recording and have read a couple of books. My goal is to record a bunch of songs that I've written over the years (used to be in a band), pretty much going to be recording by myself. Nothing too fancy, as I'm not trying to get gigs or radio play; more for fun and a hobby. Music is simple rock mostly. Since it's not a big deal for me, I've gone the cheap route.
I've ended up with:
Tascam DP-01 mixer
Shure 57 & MXL V67G Mics
M-Audio DMP3 mic pre
Korg AX1000G guitar fx
Drums by rhythm rascal and wave/track editing on my ok but not great PC.
I've played with some VST plugins (whatever I could find free) for some effects to put on my vocals and drums, but there's not a ton I've found that sound that great to me. Granted, I'm still learning and playing.
For some reverb/delay/compression I've started researching outboard units like the Lexicon MPX100 or the TC Electronics M300 or VST plugins like Voxengo. But then I wondered, at least for ambience type things, why can't one use a good HT receiver as a processor? I have a Sony flagship ES receiver (STR-DA777ES) that's ultra quiet, and Yamaha's DSP processing in even their cheap receivers is outstanding. I searched on the board here for a similar discussion, but haven't seen anyone bring it up before.
Bear in mind my total noobness before destroying me please.
Thanks, and keep up the great advice in general.
Mike
