Hello,

I am new at this so I don't expect any detailed answers -- maybe "look here in the help files" or "read this web article at ..." would be a good enough answer for now.

I was playing with a new project and was trying to record a midi track and then record an audio track and I realized I didn't know what I was doing (HomeStudio 2002 also crashed with protection faults in kernal32 a couple of times).

Any guidance, readings on recording midi and audio in one project would be appreciated. I did find it interesting that none of the HomeStudio 2002 tutorials mixed audio and midi.

Thanks,

kevin

Hmmm.... I really don't see the problem (but maybe that's because I know how it's done ;) ).

1. Create a MIDI-track. Choose wich output you want to use. Arm it. Record.
2. Create a audio-track. Choose wich input you want to use. Arm it. Record.

All this should be in the manual and the help files...

And a little "by the way": What soundcard do you have?

Moskus,

It seems logical that it seems that easy! I guess those crashes through me off.

I am using the Tascam 224 for midi and audio recording. I downloaded the latest tascam drivers and maybe I should go look for the latest cakewalk updates -- maybe my crashes are due to some known issue.

Using a Dell 1Ghz with 128mb ram 7200 rpm drive.

Thanks,

Kevin

Don't think there are any updates for HS2002 yet. But they will shurely come...

Some questions though:
- Is HS the only app (well...) that's crashing your computer?
- Is HS the only audio-app that's crashing your computer?
- Do you use other audio-app and are they working fine?
- Has your motherboard a built-in soundcard?
- If yes, is it disabeled?
- Have you checked for irq-conflicts? Especially between USB and whatever...

The soundcard on your motherboard (WMA maybe?) can cause all kinds of problems. You need to be sure HS is using your soundcard of choice. Do this in the audio settings and you will probably need to fool around the with device manager in windows to disable other soundcards, dont' forget to run wav profiler.

Crashes are a drag for sure but usally can be fixed by resolving conflicting devices and re-starting program/computer. Re-installing never hurt anyone either.

Also be sure to check you soundcard mixer settings so that the "line in" selection is checked so that your pc is "hearing' external audio. Once you get the audio going the midi falls in line or at least makes more sense.

And even though it's not very helpful, RTFM! It takes about 20 minutes. Garrigus' Cakewalk Power is a good resource too.

I forgot to turn off the virus protection and I didn't think about disabling the built in sound card. ... and irq conflicts is another thing to look at. Thanks for the inputs.

I did go through the entire (small) printed manual and tutorials and then searched the help file for discussions on mixing audio and midi -- didn't really see anything that discussed that situation. Is Garrigus' Cakewalk Power a book that can be found at, say Barnes and Noble?

Thanks,

Kevin

One other thing, are you running Win2000 or XP, by any chance? If so, have you disabeled ACPI? ACPI is known to stear all your hardware to one IRQ ( it doesen't at my computer, ACPI worked better than "standard pc", but it could help you). Read here about ACPI and how to disable it...

Good luck! Hope you work it out! :)

Cakewalk Power is really the Bible on the program (that doesn't mean it's perfect). It's not writen specifically about HS but most CW programs operate very similarly. As far as set up is concerned I think it's all pretty much the same. The book is easily available at B&N or Amazon, Amazon has a downloadable version for 23. that I did which was cool b/c you get it NOW. As opposed to two days from now!
