Great production

Really enjoyed this. The talent on this Forum is overwhelming. I am going to search for music by both of you for sure. I just checked out a guy called Emeric and a guy called Erland. Amazing songs. Do you guys do lots of collaborations here?

DISCLAIMER Listening at work on laptop and headphones. I'll check it out tonight at home on the speakers.

Overall, I think this tune/mix/production has some more potential in it. I like the song. I especially love the groove this thing has at the start - but, the mix seems a little thin - or maybe the lead is stepping on it (have to agree with an earlier post that the lead comes out of the gate too fast). Also, I'm thinking the drums need some punch.

As the song progresses, I start to lose that initial groove - not sure why. Hate to pile on, but it might be the lead guitar again (sorry SLuiCe). I think I'm hearing a more bluesy guitar in my head for this one. Later in the song, after the lead had done it's thing, I'd love to hear everything quiet down and come back to that initial rhythm-groove.

I'm hearing some distortion throughout (e.g @ 1:40 - but elsewhere too).

Good lyrics and very topical. I like the rhyme "eyes of man/Jerusalem"

I know this sounds pretty critical, but the both of you have set high bars for yourself given your previous contributions.

yeah, the more I listen the more distortion/clipping I hear..

and the more I like the song..

I'm sorry. I half-assed this. I improvised the guitar- it's the second take. I did the mix in less than two hours. I got the tracks the other day and went to it. I have a couple more personal excuses but I already feel like an asshole for half-assing my own challenge. And there really is no excuse for half-assing anything you do.

Regarding the clipping, it's the vocal track. According to my meters it was recorded a little too hot. I tried a little compression, but I already knew there is no real fix for that. But rather than ask Al to re-track a GREAT performance, I thought I'd just share the song and move on. Al, if you see this, you might want to look at that wave file just to make sure it wasn't the MP3 encoding. The wave I have gets pretty hot. Sorry we didn't have more time to work that out. You're a fine guitar player, and could play this song 10 times better than me. So please do, and post it for us!

Also, I'm sorry if I trampled the song with the guitar. It was the only instrument I played on it and I was just having fun. Lost control I guess. But I still had fun with this whole thing, even if I "failed" the challenge. It's kinda nice to read that I'm being held to such a high standard, but I guess the timing is a bit shitty for me. :) Maybe I'm over analyzing the situation and "sound" melodramatic, but I just enjoy making music. I'm probably going to regret hitting the "submit" button later, but for some reason I had to get this off my chest. Afterall, most of us are friends here, so I'm a little less nervous for it.

Thank you guys for the great HRC songs you've been producing! That's the main reason why I don't regret having posted this challenge!!!

Happy tracking,
Tom

OH geez..........see, now I don't agree with the criticisims about the guitar at all..........not to be shoving my nose up your butt or anything, but as I said in my post........it's similar to that Gary Moore style.......some like it and some don't but it could hardly be called "half-assed."

So I think maybe you're overreacting a little bit.........not everyone likes everything........that doesn't mean it's no good; things like this are a matter of taste. Also.....discussions between collaborators about liking or not liking tracks should be kept to the PMs.......it's too easy for someone to get hurt feelings when it's out in public.

I'll say it one more time.......I'm gonna learn this song to do with my band next week.........how many crappy songs do you think I decide I want to play?

Damn good performances from both of you!!

The overall guitar sound is nice, but the mids.....maybe it's just me. They seem to ring a bit in spots, could be my speakers or my abused ears. There's some damn good guitar playing going on here, Sluice!

Craw, love the vox! Great work!

Top notch stuff here! Very inspirational!

Shit, if I said something offensive to Al I'm really sorry!!!! I was just explaining where the clipping sound came from, the vocal track I mean. I thought his performance was so good, I left it pretty dry. The guy can sing circles around most of us. I didn't mean to point fingers or anything. Shit happens! And I didn't really give Al much of a chance to critique my work because like me he gets very busy and I figured it might be a day or two before i heard back. Or I just completely misunderstood your comment, and it's time to move on! :D And dammit, it's HRC season! :) So enough of my anxiety...let's hear some more HRC's!!! We knew this wasn't going to be easy! :) (Suprised I haven't been mailbombed yet!)

SluiCe ... et. al.

I've always viewed any post as one "data-point" of many. Like Lt. Bob sez, not everyone is going to like everything. If a post rings true, consider it, otherwise, fuck it and move on. "Fuck It and Move On" - I may have to write a tune with that title. LOL.

Personally, I come to this site for REAL criticism and ideas. I want an honest opinion. When I want "knee-jerk atta-boys", I play my stuff for Mom. LOL.

I posted a song a few months back that I had really toiled over. The response was not what I was expecting - but, utlimately, I came out of it "stronger". I'll never record an acoustic direct again, damn it ..... in my best Homer Simpson voice ..... "Stupid direct acoustics".

You and Crawdad post awesome material .... honest.

Your e-friend .... BPOCO

damn this is soooo good......reminds me of Steely Dan with some extra edge on the gits.....it's already been said but the vocals ARE stellar!!!.....fantastic intro....great tune, great performance, great recording....some very nice work!!!.....btw: who did the drums?

A very good vibe, and sounds like a very clean recording. (I haven't read all of the comments here, so I may repeat something)...

These collabs are going really well. Amazing how, even with the distance between us all, the vibe and feeling is totally there.

This one sounds excellent to my ears. Excellent vocals and very nice playing all around. Great sound on the guitar especially those guitar arrpegio's right around the 1:30 mark or so.

All I can say is, my "Collab" CD is going to rock!

Now, if Mixmkr will ever get ours done ... :D

Rock on!

:D :D :D :D :D

Bpoco, since this got bumped to the front, I just wanted to tell you I wasn't reacting to your critique. I only quoted you because it summed up some of the guilt I was feeling about not giving Al my best. I'm never looking for atta-boys and back patting. I just felt bad about posting his song prematurely. You mentioned a song you posted that didn't get the response you were expecting. I've posted a lot of music here. I got exactly the response I was expecting. That's why I felt bad.

So anyway, I didn't mean anything against you, man. You did your job and I appreciate it! Cheers! :)

Tom

I'm taking the song down for now. Al has asked me to re-do my parts so I'm going to. We'll post it when it's done. Thanks everyone!

.........shit:(

...been out on vacay w/ family... .....was really looking forward to hearing this......
.....I'll be on the lookout for the remix
