Here's a track I did with no effects and not too much mixing done just yet. What do you guys think of the drums?! The piano is a very nice sounding soundfont, and the drums are a very nice sounding Pearl Export with a bunch of great cymbals. Any comments on the drums specifically for this is the toughest instument to mic and mix?! What would you do to improve it during the FX and Mix??!!

pretty darn good Carlos-Drums sound very adequate-kick is good-rim shots are just barely making it through, cymbals sound a bit harsh on a few of the hits-If you're using overheads-you might want to move em a bit higher..Holy cow that snare that comes in halfway through is pretty obnoxious---needs some taming for sure-almost sounds like 2 sounds at once....wierd. The room sound is also pretty prominent-you might want to deaden your walls if possible and/or go for the verb (especially on the rim shots). Very pretty tune as well-enjoyed it.

The kick drum is a little too "Roomy".The song is geat man.Is this an original? The vocals and harmonies are beautiful.......I dont know what you're saying(is that spanish?) but I get a sad feeling listening to the vocals. The snare sounds really "roomy" also after the 2:49 mark.

Good tune carlos.

I agree with the drum comments so far. The room sound is a bit much. Kinda hot in the mids. The rest of the recording sounds nice.

Did you add those birds in there?

Hey in the future enable download for everyone if you can. I had to stream this one and I hate doing that.

Drums are waaaay too clanky. I like the flow but every time the kit chimes in it seems harsh. Nothing a little level adjustments won't fix. The rising vox line somewhere close to the middle was killer. Nice work.

Carlos my friend, Great tune. The drums sound like they're in a small room. Like maybe it's all overheads and no tight mics. That might not nessassarily be a bad thing in general but here it makes the drums souns very seperate from the rest of the tune (like they're not in the same "space" at all). Are you using any tight mics on the snare or toms?

the drums make the tune sound very "live"....if thats what you are after, you did it.....if not, take some of the drum mix suggestions given......

the tune is great....very pretty melody and nice textures to the music......

Kramer made a remark about the snare after 2:49...i think the whole drum sound takes a turn for the worst at that point....levels way off.....

outside of the drums, this is perfect.....

Thanks for the replies. I'm not too happy with the drum sound. The playing was actually good but the recording doesn't do it too much justice. Unfortunately this is going to be one of those things that I'll HAVE to fix in the mix because I can't retrack the drums. Oh well, I figure I'll do my best with what I've got. The tune is an original and I'm singing in spanish. The vocal track(s) were just there to get a feel of what it'll sound like once I record the "real" vocals. They were done with an SM 57 a little rev and autotune. The drums were recorded with two ECM 8000 as overheads, shoulder height (to not get that much room) a PG 52 inside the kick and an SM 57 on the snare. I agree that the difference between the rim and the snare is too big, rim shots should be louder and warmer and snare should be tamed down... again, a mix issue that I'll resolve. The intention was not to have so much room as I did my best to tame it (and it is a small lousy sounding room) but after listening to it a few times, I kind of like that 70's feel that the drum sound gives the track. Of course, I'll have to work on blending everything. The "birds" you hear at the beginning were added intentionally. It's a "forest sounds" pad that is prominent in the first track of this new project I'm doing and I wanted it to blend into the second. It's a conceptual project and I'm doing this on all the tracks... the pad at the end of this track blends perfectly with the pad at the beginning of the next one. Thanks for the comments, I'll try to fix everything and once the bass, violins, voices and lead guitars are added I'll repost it for your feedback.

As a drummer and a half ass recorder im going to have to disagree on the drum sound, to me with the exception of
some levels here and there i think the drums sound great.
Alot better than most home recordings of drums.
I honestly thought at first it was a drum machine by the type of sounds you where getting.
I wish I could get this good of a sound.

You might be having some phase issues that are noticable on the cymbols and snare. Try a mix with just one of the overhead mics and see if that sounds a little crisper. The kick is a little too boomy for that type of song. That snare that comes in towards the end seems very out of place.

If you can tame the drums a bit you'll probably have a cool song.

Thanks for the possitive comment Herm!! More and more I'm happier with the actual sound I have recorded on these drums, however, during the mix I'm going to have to adjust levels quite some. Tex, I'll check again on the phase problems. I did check them and only decided to reverse the phase on the kick... but maybe I'll have to look into that again.

Shit man Sorry carlos. So everyone doesnt think Im totaly deaf
I was listening to the wrong song.

I listend to the first song on nowhere radio and thought that was the one everyone was commention on.

Now i feel like a dumb ass

No problem Herm. The drums on the first song there WERE programmed.

Carlos

Nice song. Nice room drum sound. Only thing is that you need a bass guitar track to go with the kick.

good job!

Zeke - Thanks. The song is still in the process of being put together, so yes, soon I'll add bass, lead guitars, the "real" vocal tracks, and I'm even going to put a violin at the beginning.

King - Muchas gracias su majestad. ;)
