Here's my submission to the latest challenge. No vocals yet.

Recording notes:

5 mics on the drums; 57-snare, beta 52 kick,a pair of oktava 319's overhead(using the tubedude mic method(about 3 stick lengths up)) and akgc4000 as the room mic.

guitars-strat-marshall-sm57

bass-direct to tascam board.

I aplogize for the stutters and 1 click in the mp3-I tried about 20 times and this is the best it came out, my comp is down and I had to do this at work....

I won't be near a comp till this weekend, so I thank anyone in advance for listening-I'll send pm's when I get back on-line.

song is called "Pretty Girl"

Yeah, there's a couple of hicups in the mp3. Oh well:cool: . VERY cool after the 2:00 minute mark when all the guitar stuff starts happening. Very thick. I dig it.

I agree with track rat. From 2.00 on, is awsome. But the main verse guitar riff is not as strong. A bit greenday-Grinspoon but without the intensity. I would try and come up with a better verse thats more in the style of the end section. Which rocks.
The mix sounds a little mono but I know its early days there still. The individual sounds are going well. Cool guitar playing.

I like the way the song gets better. Starts out a bit cheesey, but really comes to life by the end. Good twist.

I'm not diggin that room mic though, and I normally like "roomy" drums. I think it's giving the drums that "cardboard box" sound, especially the kick. Maybe experiment with placement some more, or you could try nudging the track to cancel different freqs.

I think those mp3 skips make for a pretty weird effect - you're disqualified!

But really, the song sounds cool. I like the buildup. And the begining makes a good backing track for a melodic vocal part. I know that you know how to use effects tastefully, so I think this will sound cool once you do your thing.

Is that how you usually mic the drums? I would have thought you usually mic the toms. Cymbals sound great as they are.

Well you kept true to form, sounds dry and I don't hear any post track processing. I think the first two minutes need to have the vocal present before I can form an opinion. If the vox do something extraordinary this could be completely different, as it stands now I think it sounds too typical of songs I've heard in the past.

strato you are a phenomenal guitar player...and who played the drums they're pretty darn good there damn selves....u are one of the few that makes me appreciate music from this genre...good work...i just thought the kick could of had some more omphh

the drum sound does sound a little odd and it may very well be the room mic like M.Brane said......

the guitars sound good....Id very much like to hear this finished and with a better quality mp3:D

I like the sound you're getting on your guitar. This song screams "She Hates Me " by Puddle of Mudd.:D Have you been listening to their album?LOL.........good drum sound.......the bass sounds a little undefined...I know it's there but it's kind of a blurr down low....a timing problem in one spot.......Nice little solo.I like the ending lead guitat stuff..tasteful.....I like it man!

Almost missed this one.

I'll let that pop at :38 slide since you mentioned it. :D. Ditto for the stutters. :D:D Yeah some real tempo issues.

I think has some good potential. Good groove to it. With some good lyrics and melody it could be awsome. The makings of a real good song.

Trip.

sounds pretty cool stratomaster.

will sound good with some vocals to it.

the mp3 was chocking a few times.

the beginning does sound like puddle of mud :) what can you do when you only have 14 barre chords to choose from :D

yeah, this one's calling for vocals bad, i can almost hear them......solid start.....sounds great for a dry mix.....i like the drum sound quite a bit

Cool Tune.
That clipping near the start had me a little nervous through the first listen. Lots of good sounds in there but the drums are kindof leading the way a little to strong I think.

edit:
I just wanted to add, in the spirit of the event, that the spinning guitars at the end were brilliant. Probably the sweetest "natural" verb effect I've heard yet.

That is a fat guitar sound man. I liked the way you used some variation on the theme as the song moved along. It does sound like its a bed for a vocal melody and another instrument or two peeking in and out in places. Pretty darned good man.

yeah ok so the guitar sound cool and everything....

BUT THOSE DRUMS ROCK!!!.....where the hell is the vocals..??..
the lead is killer too...ok its either a bad file...OR all the instrumentation slows down togther....its creepin me out....

what is that ...IS IT JUST ME.......HEY THAT ENDING GUITAR PART IS AWSOME.....AAAAAAAAAAA WHAT IS THAT TIMING THING?!?!?!?!..

i need a bath.

Trip, why don't you change your name to TriplePop? :D

Sounds like you used a -80dB headroom for the vocals. It sounds really good! You're an amazing singer, Jim!

I've got nothing useful to add. Most of it has been said already...

You still rock.

Damn. Good tone. Could have used a bit more clarity, but that's probably just me. What's the gear and setup? And when are we going to play chess? I've been practicing. I have 2 openings now.

That's some fine work!!!!! all you guy's make me sick!! ;) sweet tracking, fantastic tune! want the vox!!!!

One question.........What brand and serie's cymbal's is your drummer using?? I think they sound great! Like all the sound's..especially the crash! NICE!

Thank's, strat!!!! and for listening to my last remix too....I replied to you, but i deleted the thread about 30 min's later!! It was just that bad!! jeesh!

Peace

Rick

Yeah!
A bit of Green Day too.
I like how it develops to the end, chaos-ish in a good way.
Want to hear some vocals too. So far it's promising.
