Audio Bum
I've got a couple tunes for the raw tracks challenge. This is an album I'm working on for an Aussie blues player Earl Douglas. We've recorded a bunch of guitars and vocals that may or not be replaced and he's currently trying to find a good rythm section.

I did cheat and use 2db of limiting on both tracks for the sake of the mp3 conversion. I was too lazy to edit a few peaks :o Otherwise this is the raw tracks with no EQ, processing or mix effects.

'Lie to Myself' has some drums and 'Sunrise' is just acoustics and vocals. I'd like to know what you all think about the sound in general. We'll be adding bass and some other stuff later on.

PS - I couldnt get 'Lie' to stream properly so you might have to download, sorry.

hello there, Tex

this really shows your skill in tracking. NICE! It sounds really darn good, obviously you need to eq out some lows on the vocal, but I think this really sounds good as is.

Good job!

lie to myself...

"lie to myself"
This type of stuff doesnt need any help from effects.Sounds great.......good tracking and the guy can really sing.Nice guitar chops and the percussion is working pretty well.....enoyed it man.

"Sunrise" - Man, his voice really reminds me of our own resident CEP moderator (dobro)... I likes it.

Is he playing one of your guitars? A Larrivee, perhaps? It has a really familiar sound to it...

CLEAN vocal track.

Not bad, Tex...for an amateur. ;)

Yup, I can learn stuff from you...but I'm so damned hard headed, lol.

hahahaa...I'm glad you think so too. Sometimes I hear things and, well...you know how it is, what with the meds and all, lmao.

I hope Dobro catches this.

LMAO!

:D

It's naked! Dobro? I thought Blind Melon chitlin' maybe. I'd like to hear this one dressed up a bit.:D

Excellent Tex!

I love these two songs and I hope you let us hear them when you get to the final product!

I thought this was REALLY dry. Like I wanted to go peel off the cover off my monitors and I'd see this tiny little man sitting inside playing the guit, kinda like Men In Black.

Very live feel, great sound. Great job.

A1A2- Thanks man. Low cuts are my best friend and worst enemy. I did a mix of this before and I cut the hell out of it and made it too thin. I'll need to find the balance.

Jamal- we are definately redoing the vocals on both tunes. Lie was just some scratch vocals on a 57. Earl said the same thing about the brushes. I think next time I record brushes we'll have to try for a darker or more sparse sound. Thanks.

Chris- I can't remember which guitars he was using. I think there is a mix of my Larivee on rythum and his Maton parlor on lead. It's mainly a matter of all my stuff sounding the same anyway, lol.

Kramer, Toki, Scott, Komp, TR- Thanks guys.

I was surprised how dry the tracks came out since I hadn't even added any treatment to the room yet. I did have him play by a big couch and I pulled the cushions up so they covered the wall a bit.

This guy is Dobro. Well actually it's me and I am also Dobro. I thought you guys knew that already? I've been getting treatment but sometimes I still have 'breaks'. When I'm really out of it I still post as Dobro.

Sounded killer. I do a laid a back bluesy thing like this.. but about half assed compared to this guy. He's definitely got it going on. Is this on the new Radar?

YES!!!!
I love acoustic blues!!!
Robert Johnson is da man!!
Living in Texas you get to hear a lot of this type of stuff. You make em look like they're all runnin in slow motion man!! Fantastic stuff. I love to hear the finger squeals and stuff, that comes from the heart. I am really diggin' this...

omg.. streaming from NWR is almost impssoble for me right now...

Very solid performance. hard to say anything about the drums.. hats are pretty loud.. I coulda wished for more snare..

Guitars are good, tho I'd like a touch more body there.. sounds a bit scoped.. kinda hollow...

Vocals.. that a dark mic ( or pre or cord or..) Toob? It souds like someone's singing through a thick towel..

A very cool and laid-back blues. I enjoyed the song a lot, and I bet this makes good mixing material.

I'm interseted in the mic/pre/recorder chain you're using. plz spill yer guts! :)

Nice song Tex. I enjoyed listening to it.

Lie to Myself

The brushes need to be bit brighter. Not much, just a bit more definition.

That's the best nit-pick I can come up with on this. Nice job, Tex.:)

lol...well, the reason it sounded so familiar to me has nothing to do with your previous recordings...God knows I haven't listened to those, lol. It sounds like a Larrivee D-03 I record with A LOT. Man, I just love that sound.

JR- Thanks for listening. Yeah that's the Radar @24bit and 44.1Khz. I want to try some 96khz stuff for a few of his songs and see what kind of a difference it makes. I recorded the mix using some really cheesy cables into the analog inputs on the Masterlink. I'm going to be doing the real mixes back through the Radar and go digitally into the Masterlink so that should give me a little more fidelity.

King- Thanks man. It always cracks me up that this guy is from Australia. There's a small blues scene here in Phoenix but Earl is digging it because compared to Australia it's kicking.

Mesh- I agree with that pretty much. I'm not completely satisfied with the acoustic guitar tones I'm getting right now. All of that was pretty much an MXL V93- Ghost- Radar-Masterlink. I like the way the V93 picks up the squeaks and high end but it is missing a little body. I may blow my tax refund on a good ribbon mic to blend in a warmer body tone. The vocals on 'Lie' were just a 57 and they are too dull sounding. The vocals on 'Sunrise' were the V93 and that mic works a lot better with his voice. We'll be doing all the keeper vocals with that mic.

M- I agree with that too. I usually add a little high EQ on the snare but this is the raw version. The problem with brushes is that they get really noisy when you add some EQ for snap. I think next time we need to do a more sparse brush arrangement so it's not just a wall of hiss.

Chris- Yeah, I've got a D03. I love that guitar with the right strings on it. Earl put some lighter ones on it and it sounds wimpy and shitty right now. I need to put some heavier ones on it for the next session. That guitar is going to be a keeper. I've never played an acoustic with the same clarity and definition as the Larivee. It's a great finger picking guitar.

Tex! This is really cool! (lie to myself) I love it just like it is, no shit! It's perfect! superbly "raw", luv's it! I could gush all day on this one!:D

Thank's, Tex!

Peace

Rick
