Hey guys, I appreciate the listens and comments. This was about the toughest challenge for me so far. The bed was actually an older thing I had posted several months ago. I sent it to Daf and he liked it and had some lyrics already. He sang a version with harmonies. He did an asskicking new piano and organ part on it, two saxs, two trombones, and a trumpet. He also did the idea of drums from a stoptime to bring it back for the reprise section for the ending. I got his tracks a few weeks ago but with busy at work, a back injury, and a bout with the flu I was like knocked down big time. I worked in bits on it lining tracks up and rudimentary track mix. I added the bass track, drum fills, another rythym piano, and some sampled brass stabs and riffs to compliment his horn section (tried to think like Stevie might think) Friday night. We had discussed a friend of mine that I had worked with before for a few yrs, singing it along with a couple of girls that work with her, I called her and she was on for it. The soonest they could make it though was 4 pm Sat afternoon and I had a gig Sat night. I finished tracking them at 5 and still had time to get ready to go play but not to mix.
I started back mixing on this around 3 Sunday afternoon and wrestled with it until around 9:30 last night.
Daf will have to tell you what he used since i really dont know all of it but I`ll share mine..
The drums are a bluejay drum font thru a Timeworks Eq and Compressor with a tiny bit of verb.
The bass is my Washburn 5 string thru
an ART tube compressor into the Tascam mixer.
The accompanying brass section is from a creative sound font with anwida verb tru the timeworks eq and comp.
The rythym piano is a roland XP soundfont.
The vocals were recorded in 2 tracks with a Shure SM97 condenser thru the ART Comp/preamp. One primary and one background track. I doubled the backing tracks and opposed the panning at about 10% L/R and added a small touch of verb above 2k.
I had lost a set of phones and only had two, so two of the girls had to share a set when they cut the harmonies.
I tracked the externals on
the Tascam m30 into a soundblaster.
I mixed internally using Sonar 2XL.
There are a few mix issues I`m going back to correct such as the level on the drum roll before the jam, raising the instruments level across the board, backing off the drum part a bit, and the bass down a touch, and that glitch Sam caught. I would have done it earlier but I was out of time to meet the deadline and I`m still tired from it today here at work.
I appreciate you Dach', Sam, Charva, fprod, MC gitarz, buck my bud, Steve, twist, powderfinger, Ghost, and my sweethearts Chad and Joro... yall make hard learning worth it. 'makes me happy as hell if yall like it..
Dach' sorry it was so big and the high bit rate. I told Winlame to do extreme and it turned out that rate. I remember 56k...
Jay out of town and wont be back till tommorow but he said go ahead and post it. Im in hopes he`ll be pleased.....
