I have a Marshall MG100HDFX head amp for my guitar. If you are familiar with this amp it has an emulated line out for heardphones and recording. I decided to run a line from this to my computer line in for recording purposes yesterday, but got nothing registering on the computer side. The line from the amp is a 1/4" guitar cable, that I have a mono adapter attached to on the computer side that reduces it to proper size. The cable works, and the amp output works, but for some reason I am getting nothing on the computer when I try to record. I also tried it through the mic input with no luck.

Just to try to isolate the problem I recorded my voice with a mic that is on my headset. That worked fine, so I know it is something wrong with my amp/computer set up. Obviously it is not a mute issue either, since it worked with a mic.

Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I notice that the headphones I usually use are stereo, and the cable/adapter I am using are mono. Could this be the problem?

I don't have a definitive answer for you but, if your line in works and your guitar works then, well there's only one other culprit, the cable. However I'm probably completely wrong. Oh shit wait make sure you have the right output jack on your amp. Try all the "outs" on it.

I'm a little concerned about using a 100W output for input to my computer. Couldn't I really mess something up? I have reason to believe that I fried a soundcard that way in highschool.

DO NOT hook up the power outputs to your soundcard. Unless of course you are trying to fry it.

-Plug a set of phones into your "Emulated line" and make sure it is working properly. If so, then make sure you have a good cable between your amp and the soundcard line in.

-Next I would check the obvious culprits like the volume knob on the amp. Who knows, you might need a really high output setting in order to get the proper signal going from the DI output. Either way it shouldn't hurt anything turning it up.

-The only other thing I can think of is that your line in is maybe a stereo 1/8" jack. So using a mono adapter could result in loss of sound if you were trying to track from the left mono input and your actually only inputing on the right side (because of the cable adapter). Try and record a stereo waveform. You should be able to see right away if your getting anything from either side.

hope this helps
