I'm sort of embarrassed to admit this is giving me trouble, but I can't decide if I should play this riff/fill with alternate picking or a sort of sweep picking (which I've never done before). It's probably too slow for typical sweep picking, but I basically mean down, down, down, up.

It's at most 100 bpm. Each note is a 1/16th.

----12-----12--11----11---10----10---9---9-
-10-----------9----------8----------7-------

Hell, lets make it poll, just for fun!

I would probably normally go Down, Down, Up, Down repeat.

Depends on my mood. Sometimes I might do all downstrokes for something like that. Or maybe sweep the first 2 notes up and then sweep the next 2 down.

down, down, up, up for me

100 bpm is most probably my limit for this one ;-).

do you know this harmonic-lick in the intro of an old bon jovi song called "raise your hands"? similar problem. can't play it. ok, maybe because i don't really know what he's playing there :p

I don't have a guitar handy, but I suspect I would end up down-down-down-up-position shift-repeat.

I'd probably play it at 12 bpm, and just pick down. That's about my speed....

It does seem a bit slow for sweeping so I'd probably keep it alternate picking. But if you wanted to sweep, I would play the notes on the third string using an upstroke (as 6 said) and notes on the fifth with a down stroke. Or if sweeping, and to spice it up, you could add a note on the third & fifth strings, then alternate pick them which would put you back in the right direction for the next string.

I'm going against the normal-I naturally played it with all up-strokes to give each note the same volume. I just read the tab and thats what came out~

Down down down up seems good to me.

However, nothing but down strokes always sounds good!

Down down down up. 100bpm seems to be around my speed limit for this, on acoustic anyway. I'm not really a fast player. :o

I don't have a guitar handy to actually see how well I could play this, but I'd start with a d,d,u,u,d repeat. I tend to pick with the upcoming movement, hence not using d,d,d,u etc.

Grab your guitar around the 2nd/3rd fret to mute the strings, then just tap it with your left hand :)

Yeah, down down up up etc would be the most efficient, esp. if you were going to play that really fast.

Alternate picking, to sweep seems unconventional in this instance. Alternate works out very well.

I use a progression similar to that in one of my songs.

down down up up

Also, do not bar the 5th and the octave as in a normal power chord. Fret each note and release. Think of it as kind of playing a solo

Index finger for the root
Middle finger for the 5th
Ring finger for the octave

This will bring you back to your starting position as you switch chords and make each note distinctive as to where barring the 5th and the octave would cause notes to ring over one another.
