Geez, I can't believe the variety of responses I got on what I thought was a pretty straightforward question. It gives me a lot to think about. I'm still torn between my original two options. I tried a few of the other suggestions to varied success. DDUU to me seems to make sense, but I can't do it with any sorta rhythm or feel. I think having to jump over the 3rd string between the D and the U is causing me trouble. PRetty basic stuff, but it's hanging me up, anyway.

I'm an acoustic quasi-flatpicker at heart, so the straight alt. pattern is most intuitive to me, but certainly not the most efficient. Anyway, I'll keep trying a few different ways, and I guess I'll have to settle into something soon, and just stick with it. I did like the idea, alien, about fretting it note for note, rather than slopping the power chord down and picking the 4 notes. I'll give that a whirl tonight.

i think it just would depend on how you want it to sound. dduu may sound more legato, udud would be more normal.

i would play it udud, but that's just me.

it seems like some punk riff to me without hearing it. are you muting any of these notes?

I wouldn't say it's too slow for sweep picking. Sure, it may call for slightly more seperated pick attacks, but it's really the same mechanics.

I would pick that d,d,d,u,u,d,d,u,u,d,d
And I would play the D and G string by rolling my ring finger.

Yeah, it's a bit punk, I suppose you could say. No mutes. As far as how I want it to sound, I just want to play the right notes in time. I don't care if it ends more legato or staccato, as long as I can play it.

The whole riff, if anyone REALLY cares, is a Eb powerchord (6th fret) for 2 beats, then a B powerchord (7th fret) for 2 beats. Do that 3 times, then insert the little decending run. The whole thing repeats a few times. Kinda punky, I guess.

Thats just powerchords going down the neck. Play them full strum and as fast as possible. GABBA GABBA HEY!
