how would this turn out?

A friend of mine has a Fostex 8 track digital recorder. I was wondering how would a recording would turn out if we used a 16 track mixer into to recordor because the recorder only has two inputs. We were going to record every thing at the same time all in the same room and mix everything before hand. We would add vocals and lead gutiar later. Any idea what we should do.

You may as well go ahead and record staight into a cd burner because you have just defeated the porpose of having the fostex unit.

That's called 'live to two track'.
If everything is done well, your done in one pass. But everything has to fall in place-the mix and all the performances.
It's a lot to get right at the same time, but everyone will sure learn a lot quick! You would tend to spend more time on getting your music right and the set up, doing takes and fixing things till it's right. One of the hard parts might be the amount of trial takes to get the mix right. If your recorder is in an isolated room, you can work on the mix as the band plays-otherwise it's: do a take, adjust, do a take, adjust, i.e, not very efficient. In a band rehersal set up, it can work well.

If you do that then you will not be able to adjust the volume, eq, effects of each track. You would have to get every instrument set perfectly before you record the mix. That can be tough to do.

Na, just set up a good mix from another room, and go for it.
Doing that while playing in the band, now that's a tough one!

Have you given thought to being able to use multiple mics on a single source. It could easily used for doing a mix of the drums to 2 track and now leaving 6(?) open. In a perfect world the drummer knows how to play the song and with a click. I currently use a product called metrophones. Gives the person wearing an adjustable metronome. Stack and bounce everything else. Boston did it!
