I own a Studio Projects C1, so I'm familiar with it's sonic characteristics. I'm thinking of buying another LCM. How you compare the Shure KSM44 and the SP C1.

I think the Shure's running about $700 at the moment.

I think you mean a LDC- Large Diaphragm Condenser

I think the Shure would be a huge improvement over the C1, but I think $700 can be better spent

I would compare them by plugging them both in and seeing which one sounds better on a variety of sources through a variety of preamps (if possible). That is arguably the only sure way to compare microphones.

I've compared the C1 to the KSM-32. I'm not sure how close the 32 is to the 44. However, in the comparison we did the 32 is very uncolored and flat. It wasn't my favorite on vocals although the singer and the engineer were used to it and ended up using it. The C1 has more of a mid/high boost which I like on vocals.

How, on world hunger? The mic is the most important link in the signal chain.

The C1 is pretty much a one-trick pony. It's a vocal mic. And it's got what we call a classic midrange scoop that is flattering to a lot of vocalists.

The ksm44 is a multi-patterned all-purpose kind of mic that is good for a lot of different things, including vocals. As a vocal mic, I would see it as being much less hyped in the higher frequencies, and a more aggressive character, overall, do to the fact that it doesn't attenuate the mids like the C1 and some of the Rode models, for example.

I'd say they're both towards the top of their respective price ranges.

...that's exactly what I meant... I gotta stop smokin' crack.

Chrisjob and all,
I've budgeted for a Great River ME-1NV which will server as the nucleus of a "golden channel". I'm looking for a vocal mic which will be a step up in terms of sonic quality from the C1. I really like the C1, but would like to have some other options. I'm willing to spend about $700-800 on another LDC.

the ksm44 is a much cleaner mic for anything application.. the c1 is a great budget mic, but it can't compare to the ksm44
