Okay...I took everyone's comments into consideration during the re-mix of this song...except one...and I'll get to that. I remixed this 3 times last night and was happy with it each time until I put it down for a while and came back. I tried the single vocal 2 times and folded...but this time I think it works better (I hope) it's focused on one with the other one softer. I also killed a bunch of reverb. I think it sounds more like my other "up front" sounding stuff. I also changed the severe panning on guitars.

Let me know what you think.

The other one is still up there if you need a comparison...

Thanks for the help people!

I remember you posting this from your mp3.com site last year and this is a BIG improvement over that mix.The first mix was really harsh........looks like you've been taking notes and putting them into practice.Nice mix dude, very easy on the ears.

Vocal sounds excellent.......just the right amount of doubling going on.

KRAMER: WOW! You've got a great memory! I haven't used that site in easily a year! I'm glad you like this version better! It always sucks when people tell you they liked a previous version (and I do get that from time to time), but that's why I decided to redo this one first, because it seemed like a fairly decent song, but it was compressed to all hell when I originally recorded it making it REALLY harsh. Thanks for the feedback!

I'm responding to all the posts from my previous link on this one...I wish you could just change the main first link for as long as you need. anyhoo...

STUDIOVIOLS: Hey thanks for the detailed feedback! It's nice to hear it deconstructed like that. Thanks for taking the time. As you mentioned, I think a lot of my issues came from clouding everything up with reverb, so I hope this new version helps take care of that. If your interested in trying a violin or cello part I'd love to hear what you come up with! That would be totally cool if you wanted to. Thanks for all the info!

BOYDRJ: Thanks! Hopefully this version has a better amount of reverb on it. Thanks for listening.

SLOOP: Thanks for responding, like I've said, hopefully this version is better. thanks.

FRESHEARS: Again, thanks!

BIGSNAKE00: Lets see here...I used a Studio Projects C1 mic on the vocals and guitar, which was plugged into my Audio Buddy Pre Amp then into the Behringer Ultra Dyne Pro (compressor), then into the Roland VS-880EX (digital 8 track...with a bunch of V tracks...i guess). The guitar is a Big Baby Taylor and the Bass is a cheap ass Fender Squire, and the drums are programmed into a Boss Dr. Rhythm 770. Hope that helps with what was used on this tune. Thanks.

WFARANI: Thanks for the kind words, but I went ahead and cleaned out some reverb. I'm still trying to figure out what if anything was sensored from your response...

MIDDLEMAN: I've actually got just about everything (with a couple dry tracks) running through the same reverb, so at least there's nothing fighting there.

SHAKEY TEE: Reverb should be better. Thanks!

Sounds loads better!!

Something is still funny on the vocal tracks... they're missing some body, or something... have you eq'ed em at all?

The reverb (off the cymbals) is still too bright... can you roll off everything on the 'verb coming off the cymbals/overheads?

Where the other mix may have been 40%, this is closer to 90%...

Keep going, it's going the right way!! :)

Wow, huge improvement, amazing.

Yes, this is a much, much better mix for your vocal, you da star man, and now we know it for sure.

The bass is booming up a bit. It can come down, and this could be your monitoring situation. Use headphones as part of your reference, good flat headphones.

EQ the bass in the bandwidth areas it is booming out ... and this will make your excellent vocal performance shine even more.

Believe it or not, the vocal can come up further, but I'll explain how to do that effectively in a moment.

Now at 1:34, I know you are saying ... well that's plenty loud, that's really to loud.
Well, it's NOT, it is a great opportunity for DYNAMICS, and it is very very effective, it is a typical chorus buildup and it's very effective, don't mess with that.

If you wanted to bring the softest parts of the vocal up ... you could do this with volume envelopes and it's a hell of a lot of work, and you have to get really good at that ... and you should have that skill ... OR

you could apply compression to the entire vocal, and just a tiny amount of compression maybe a 4:1 ratio, soft knee and then ...

normalize only the vocal track, yes, normalize the vocal track after you compress gently.

Then you will have a track that rides nice and on top of the mix, in all places, and never become 'obviously' too loud.

So, this is a really, really nice song, a very nice effort.

As any mix can be, it can be improved.

I suggest you move on to your next song, and come back to this in the future, I'm anxious to hear some more of your stuff ! :-)

The hook at the end is ... excellent.

This is very marketable material.

Good JOB !

Violin or Cello part

Part of being a professional string arranger is knowing when to leave something to simmer on the stove.

This song does not in my opinion need or call for a violin, viola or cello or any string parts. I think that might just ruin it.

I think this song is nearly finished.

Hey uh ... you should call this chick ...

:D

PARTICIPANT: I haven't touched the EQ on anything. I usually just mess it up and it ends up sound much worse. Is there any EQ suggestions for the vocals? I should be able to adjust that reverb on the cymbals without a problem. I'll try it and see what happens. Thanks for listening again!

STUDIOVIOLS: Again, thanks for helping out with this tune! You mention that my monitoring situation might be off, and you're right. This is probably one of my biggest problems in the process. All I've got to mix with is headphones right now. I'm both too broke and live in an apartment with another roommate...I know it's not close to ideal, but it's all I can work out at this time...which sucks. Would you recommend any particular flat headphones? I'll see if I can locate the boomy bass, but didn't really notice it between my stereos (car, headphones, and home)...I'll listen closer. Thanks for all the feedback! I think you're right though...I'm going sit on this song for a little while and give myself a little breathing room on this before I start screwing with it again. Thanks!

very nice. Im not hearing a good thoomp on that bass drum to accentuate the bass like I`d like but you got this tune fattened up and clean.

very nice, very nice.......great vocals here........i like the song too.......nice and chill.......cool guitar lines too

Sounds really great, nice tone on everything.

I'm not sure I like how the melodic accoustic is panned, nestled in behind the rythm, but it sounds good, maybe it's just a taste thing.

ouch...the drum ride sample all alone at the end isn't cutting it, needs a bit of humanizing at the very least.

great song robert! why keep torturing yourself with mixes? LOL. Your songwriting is ace! just keep writing stuff like this man and forget the mix. i guess this is the wrong clinic to be saying that in? the mix sounds fine to me (i'm on headphones right now). your next step is a real studio. save your pennies and take these gems to a pro!

TOKI987: Thanks for listening! I've been noticing the bass seemed light to me, but then I hear from someone else it's too boomy! is that an EQ thing? turn it up here...down somewhere else? Thanks!

POWDERFINGER: Thank you, thank you and more thanks...thanks.

DOUG H: Yeah, I've also kind of realized that both guitar parts seem pretty damn centered. Most of my stuff is really hard one side or the other. This time it seems like I went a bit much the other way with it. Thanks for responding!

ERICHENRYUS: Thanks for instilling a little confidence! I'm WAY to broke right now...let alone the fact that I've never been to a recording studio, so I would have no clue what I'm doing...also the fact that I'm a one man show right now, so what would I do with a professionally mixed tune? I wouldn't have the first idea where to try and sell it:( ...um or whatever. Someday perhaps...:D

Thanks guys!
