How was this vocal track recorded/mixed?

It's kind of like whispery... I've tried singing close to the mic but it doesn't sound quite there. Perhaps a small condenser mic?
 
My guess is he singing in a LDC and a generous amount of compression.
 
I don't hear anything too unusual here. Probably decent mic (your choice of LDC or dynamic), decent pre, decent compressor for tracking, more compression and fader riding to keep the vocal where you want it in the mix

sing it how you want it to sound so maybe move up on the mic just a little on the quieter passages to get the intimacy (not too much too kill the sound with tons of bassy proximity effect if you use a cartoid mic) and back off for the louder parts

One of the wonderful things about an RE20 is that the singer can work the mic and not change tone much at all.

In the above example they could have done the vocal in two parts, taking the intro with different settings than the rest of the song.
