how do you use an "insert"?

My Yamaha MG10/2 mixer has inserts on a couple channels. The insert mixer input is a 1/4" TRS phone jack with a rated level of 0 dbu.

I have a cable that is 1/4 TRS stereo at one end and two 1/4 TS mono at the other. If the TRS goes into the mixer, which TS goes to input vs output of the effects device: left (white) or right (red)?

Also since the level is 0dbu (unadjustable it appears), can a guitar pedal be used as an insert effect?

As long as the cable is an insert cable and not just a 'Y splitter- Color codes vary. Plug it in, if it kills the signal going through the mixer channel, swap the TS plugs around. Then mark the TS ends. Use an 'arrow' for flow direction or 'send' 'return'.

That's guite a bit hotter than instrument level.

I think you are talking about busses.....and if so...sure....
just loop the signal...

Inserts

Most manufacturers use one 1/4" tip, ring, sleeve jack socket as inserts and the tip is the send and the ring is the return. D&R uses the ring as send and the tip as return so the user can have another input to plug in another device at that point of the mixer. One thing every studio owner needs is a VOM (volt Ohm meter) with continuity checker. Then you can check all cables and connectors.
