How to use rack EQs w/ exisiting mic pre

I have an analog setup and I want to EQ before going to tape. I already have a BLUE Robbie Mic Pre that I like a lot but I want to do a little EQing before going to tape (without using my mixing board)

If I got this or a similar unit:

How would I make it work with the Robbie? Does it go inline? Before, after?

Am i going about this all wrong?

While I might in general disagree with EQ'ing to tape, the eq will go after the pre. Place it in front of the pre and it won't have anything to eq

I'm not good enough to know in all cases exactly what EQ I'll need before I set things in the mix, so I'll almost always EQ the track afterwards. The exceptions to the rule are when the EQ represents a fundamental part of the sound I'm after or when I'm out of tracks or track generation (bouncing) is an issue. The latter two are rarely a concern nowadays.

yeah, I agree with fraserhutch, I wouldn't EQ to tape cause in most cases you won't know what EQing works best until you have all of your tracks recorded and ready to be mixed...
if you get it wrong in the first place, then you could end up with bad final results as overEQing to fix mistakes can cause the overall mix to sound pretty muddy.

yes but the problem is that my ribbon mic records kind of dark and i have to bring out the highs in the mixdown. when I do this it really brings out the tape hiss so i need to EQ the highs in before it hits tape so im thinking I need a good EQ or maybe even a mic pre/channel strip rack.

i just realized that i wrote a whole reply without taking into account that you are recording to tape.

still i'll say that maybe if you had a cleaner preamp, if you don't already, then you could hit the tape harder and get above the noise floor more

and i would definitly put the EQ after the preamp. i say go ahead and EQ/compress/whatever on the way in. i find that for me sometimes when i commit to something it turns out better than when i wait in order to give myself more options later.
